The understated exterior -- a simple electronic gate obscuring a pebble-stone driveway that leads to an intimate entrance -- hints at the hotel’s upscale status. Inside, the decor blends authentic island materials (including liberal use of dark, locally sourced wood in the furniture and flooring) with elegant contemporary design (faux leather lounge chairs, mod bar stools, and metal and glass accents). Most guests are content to while away the daylight hours at the white-sand beach. After dark, the piano bar above the lobby is the only real source of entertainment. The overall vibe is quiet, serene, and intimate -- which is why most guests tend to be honeymooners and vacationing European couples.

The northwestern shores of Mauritius are among the most tourist-friendly on the island. Trou aux Biches, the tiny town surrounding the hotel, is arguably the area’s swankiest. The coastal road that runs past the hotel is dotted with upscale beach hotels and guesthouses. A 10-minute walk north or south takes guests past dozens of restaurants, bars, boutique shops, and tour offices. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is more than an hour south along modern roads. The hotel can facilitate paid airport transportation. Alternatively, the area’s taxi and shuttle services are reasonable, and rates are often negotiable.

Every suite and penthouse is tastefully decorated in a rich aesthetic. Dark wood furnishings and flooring, plush bedding (and optional four-poster beds), and a soft color palette bolster a distinctly upscale look. Entry-level Junior Suites are generously sized at 550 square feet (51 square meters), while Duplex Suites and  Penthouse room categories upgrades to 860 square feet (80 square meters) or more. All units feature private, furnished balconies with lovely views of the Indian Ocean. Rooms are well-appointed with refrigerated minibars, flat-screen TVs, and fast, free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are spacious with impeccable fit and finish, including slate tiles and dual vanity sinks. The large soaking tubs are open to the rest of the room, and offer glimpses of the ocean. The flagship Jacuzzi Penthouse adds a private hot tub.

Features mainly cater to couples on vacation. The white-sand beach is one of the most beautiful in Trou aux Biches. A handful of lounge chairs and palapas provide an exclusive place for hotel guests to relax. As is typical of northern Mauritius, the water is calm and crystal blue any time of year, in almost any weather. It's ideal for snorkeling and swimming, plus a full-service boathouse offers free water sports. A thatched-roof beach bar serves a full list of cocktails, beer, and wine, plus a light lunch menu.

The sparkling outdoor pool at the center of the property provides limited ocean views. A tall stand of trees surrounding the space guarantees constant shade and ample privacy from the beach. Unfortunately, the lack of lounge chairs or facilities means it’s best suited for a quick dip.

The full restaurant is situated just off the lobby. The intimate, upscale space blends a small indoor seating area with views of the kitchen and a similarly small terrace with glimpses of the Indian Ocean. A gourmet, buffet breakfast with housemade yogurts, baked goods, and hot items is served daily. Dinner is offered a la carte with a menu heavy on authentic Mauritian and seafood dishes. Room service is available 24-hours a day.

A limited menu of massage treatments is offered in a breezy, one-room spa space situated on the rooftop. There's room for just one couple, and access to a private shower. These are the best ocean views of anywhere on the property.

Fast, free Wi-Fi is provided in every common area, including at the beach. Free parking is available in a tiny, gated lot with 24-hour security.
