Built in 1936, the Nassau Suite Hotel -- a mid-range property with 22 suites over three floors -- is a registered
National Historic Landmark with an updated interior. The large, modern studios and one-bedroom suites have open floor plans with full kitchens, walk-in closets, dining areas, modern bathrooms, and sitting areas in most. The low-key hotel also has a business center, fitness room, and small movie theater; free breakfast and beach chairs and umbrellas to borrow are included. Just a short walk from the beach, the Nassau Suite Hotel isn’t the most
glamorous of Miami hotels, but the rooms are comfortable. The Circa 39 hotel, a 10-minute drive
away, has cheaper rates and the added advantage of an outdoor pool.
Scene
Art Deco exterior, chic and quirky interiors, and a laid-back family-friendly vibe
With square and circular windows and a powder-blue facade, Nassau Suite Hotel may not be the
prettiest of Miami's Art Deco buildings, but it has a welcoming feel inside and plenty of lively decorative
touches. The lobby is bright and attractive, with floor-to-ceiling
windows and dandelion-shaped lampshades. The
honeycomb floor tiling is chic, if a bit stark and cold. The lobby has a green and orange theme: green thanks to the
many tropical plants, and orange in the cushions,
bamboo pots, and the large beach-inspired artwork on the walls. Hints of tangerine
shades can be found throughout the hotel. It's worth noting that the hotel does look a bit tired; some areas are in need of a paint job, and the movie theater is a tad drab. The Nassau is a good choice for families, as the
rooms are spacious and close to Flamingo Park and Pool, as well as couples who prefer
self-sufficient, apartment-style rooms.
Location
In the middle of Miami's Art Deco district, on busy Collins Avenue
Nassau Suite Hotel is located in the middle of Miami's Art Deco district,
close to the beach and restaurants, and a 10-minute walk from Lincoln
Road, Española Way, and South Beach. Right on Collins Avenue,
it does get a lot of street noise, from garbage trucks to the occasional post-midnight drunken street brawl. However,
noise is generally the same for all hotels in this central area. The hotel is set in between two parks: Flamingo Park, popular with
families for its well-maintained playground and water park, and Lummus Park, a picturesque green space that has been the backdrop for many films and
television series, including Miami Vice. Miami Convention Center is a
five-minute drive away, and
the New World Symphony -- which has concerts,
master classes, monthly yoga mornings, and a vast media center -- is a 10-minute walk away. The beach is
two blocks away, and the hotel provides guests with seaside necessities like folding chairs and beach towels. There is on-site parking for a fee.
Rooms
Minimalist, modern suites -- some with kitchens and balconies -- with small bathrooms
All of the rooms at Nassau Suite Hotel are suites, decorated
in the same dark, modern, and somewhat bland minimalist style. The walls are painted a plum-gray, and the spaces feel rather cold and bare, and in
need of some softer furnishings, as opposed to the sterile white cube tables and
the white Perspex swivel chairs guests find upon entry. Rooms with hardwood
floors feel warmer than those with gray tile floors. Beds are large and comfortable, with inset headboards and
dim overhead lighting. Some suites have kitchens, stocked with cooking utensils and microwaves (none have toasters, though). Some also have private balconies. All suites have ample walk-in closet space, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, and
flat-screen TVs. Rooms facing Collins Avenue tend to be noisier, thanks to the constant activity on the street; rooms facing the adjacent building do get some noise from a garbage truck that drives by in the mornings, which
some guests may find bothersome. The best views are from rooms facing Collins
Avenue, which are One-Bedroom King Suites. Bathrooms
are quite small in some suites, but are modern in style, with fixed glass dividers
over the bathtubs and good water pressure in the showers.
Features
Fitness center, business center, and basement movie theater, plus free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and parking lot -- but no pool
The fitness center has a wall-mounted flat-screen TV,
free weights, and a handful of cardio machines, but it does feel a bit dark and small. The business center -- free to use -- has origami fabric chairs and
modern light fixtures, but it definitely still has a basement vibe. Breakfast is free, although it's rather basic; the hotel does not have a full restaurant. There is a small on-site movie theater, which can be reserved for private screenings of movies from the hotel's DVD collection; the theater itself is a bit dingy and tired. The hotel provides beach chairs and
towels for guests to borrow to take to the beach one block away. Private parking is available for a fee, but this is standard procedure in Miami. There's also free Wi-Fi. The hotel lacks a pool.
