Decor is fairly gaudy for a luxury property
This 71-room luxury hotel is situated in the posh Hivernage area of the city, just a five-minute drive from Jemaa el-Fna and the Medina's souks. Rooms are decorated with distinctive Moroccan touches, plus flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and iPads. Four restaurants serve Italian, French, Japanese, and traditional Moroccan fare, and other perks include a nightclub, three pools (one rooftop), a gym, spa, and hammam. To top it off, the hotel has its own art gallery, housing a permanent collection of local and international pieces, and airport transfers are free. The style throughout does verge on gaudy, though, and there isn't much for kids. Guests looking for a wider range of child-friendly activities and more handsome, classic decor might try the Four Seasons Resort Marrakech, though it's pricier.
Scene
An over-the-top sanctuary with vibrant interiors and lively vibe, away from the city buzz
The Pearl's location, just to the west of the historic Medina area, ensures that the immediate setting is tranquil and relaxed, despite there being a bit of buzz on-site as well. The impression is grand -- bordering on gaudy -- from the moment guests step inside of the impressive glass-roofed rotunda lobby, with its intricately carved pillars, velvet seating, and original artwork. The hotel is bold throughout, with an eye-catching iron-fronted facade designed by French architect Jacques Garcia. Interiors are awash in vibrant jewel tones like deep reds and purples, and there are plenty of places to relax, get pampered, or mingle throughout. Dining options are numerous, and a range of cuisines is available in the four fine-dining restaurants. For something a little more high-octane, the hotel's nightclub bumps with beats and booze until late. Luxury shops like Louis Vuitton are also on-site, in case there was any doubt about this hotel's target audience. As such, expect to see mostly couples here, as kids' facilities are limited.
Location
Just outside the Medina walls, in the swanky Hivernage district
Situated in the upscale Hivernage district of Marrakech, the hotel's neighbors are other high-end tourist properties like Sofitel and Novotel. It's not the most characterful area of the city, but it can be convenient for those who don't mind using cabs to get around. The ancient city square, Jemaa El-Fna is around a 20-minute walk from the hotel for those who are ambitious. However, it can be reached in five minutes or so by car. A little closer at hand is the Parc Lalla Hasna and Marrakech's largest mosque, Kouboutia, both of which are a 10-minute walk. The main bus terminal, Arset el Blik, is also a 10-minute walk, and guests can catch transport from here to Casablanca or Essaouira. The airport is 10 minutes away by car, and The Pearl offers free airport transfers.
Rooms
Over-the-top style plus large bathrooms, private balconies, and mountain views
Drawing inspiration from Moroccan design, the rooms here are certainly vibrant, though the over-the-top approach to decor will either read as gaudy or stylish depending on the guest. Purple velvet covers a majority of the surfaces, including curtains and seating, and the addition of fringes on many pieces only exacerbates the effect. Antiqued prints with decorative Arabic lettering, as well as patterns inspired by Moroccan lattice work, add local flair that's complemented by hardwood furniture and floors. All are spacious, with even entry-level rooms having 37-square-meter floor plans (398 square feet). All rooms have seating areas and private balconies, with views of the Atlas Mountains. Other standard features include large flat-screen TV, minibars, safes, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and iPads. The travertine bathrooms have ample counter space, separate bathtubs and rainfall showers, and free toiletries. Keep in mind that the moody lighting means rooms and bathrooms can both be a bit dark.
Features
Spa with hammam, courtyard pool, rooftop terrace, Moroccan and international dining, and free breakfast
While the style might be a bit too much to feel luxurious, there are a number of features here that help this hotel live up to its rating. The rooftop terrace is particularly lovely, with panoramic views of the city, a pool, and a lounge that make for a fine place to enjoy the sun or stars. There are two more pools, including an indoor option in the sharp spa, which includes a Moroccan hammam and beauty salon. There's also an extensive gym with a good selection of modern cardio and weight machines. Dining and drinking are a highlight as well, with Japanese, Italian, Moroccan, and French fare at four fine-dining restaurants plus various bars and a nightclub. Keep in mind that reservations are required for dining. A breakfast buffet includes a range of fruit, breads, yogurt, and cooked items, though it's not included in all rates. The hotel also has space for meetings and events, including its rooftop terrace. Airport transfers are free, as is on-site parking. Wi-Fi is also free throughout the hotel.
