The three-pearl Broadway Plaza Hotel is a modern boutique property located in the Flatiron District, close to a subway station and within walking distance of several famous attractions. Its 69 clean and stylish rooms were refreshed in early 2016 and offer ample space. Most rooms have Empire State Building views, but they lack coffeemakers and mini-fridges (except suites), plus Wi-Fi incurs a fee (although it's free for direct bookings through the hotel's website). A free continental breakfast and concierge services are among the amenities, but the hotel lacks a restaurant, bar, or a fitness center. Affordable rates make it a solid choice, however. The nearby Ace Hotel NY is a hip boutique with a beautiful restaurant, bar, and fitness center -- but rooms are smaller and rates tend to be a bit higher.
Scene
Quiet boutique hotel hosting a wide range of guests
This modern boutique hotel opened in 2000 above a pizza parlor in the Flatiron District and attracts a wide variety of guests, including many international visitors. The narrow entrance is lined with dark marble walls and makes a striking first impression. It's followed by an intimate lobby with a large wood and marble front desk and a brown leather sofa. A large sculpture sits in one corner on checkered marble floors, while clusters of small oval ceiling lights emit a warm glow. Hallways feature marble tile floors, quartz half-walls, and distinctive contemporary art. The main gathering space is the fourth-floor breakfast room. With only a few polished stainless steel tables and chairs, it’s a cramped space that gets packed in the morning. Many guests simply grab breakfast and return to their rooms to enjoy it.
Location
Central location in the Flatiron District, within walking distance of many attractions
The hotel is perched atop a pizza parlor at Broadway and 27th Street at the top of the Flatiron District. It’s a safe and convenient location for both business and leisure travelers. The 28th Street subway station is a one-minute walk away, and taxis are easy to hail at this location. It’s surrounded by a diverse choice of restaurants, bars, and shops. The lovely Madison Square Park is just around the corner, while the iconic Flatiron Building is a five-minute walk from here. The Empire State Building can be reached in eight minutes on foot, and Madison Square Garden, Penn Station, and shopping on 34th Street are about 10 minutes on foot. Other top sites, like Times Square and Central Park, can easily be reached by subway in eight and 20 minutes, respectively. JFK International Airport is a 45-minute drive or about an hour by public transit, while LaGuardia Airport is a 20- to 40-minute drive, depending on traffic, or about 50 minutes by public transportation.
Rooms
Spacious, stylish rooms with safes, iPod docks, and 42-inch flat-screen TVs
The 69 rooms in this modern boutique hotel were renovated in early 2016 with new headboards and furniture. They vary to some degree in shape, size, and artwork, but most rooms share a common look. The Empire State Kings and Junior Suites have a slightly different motif, but Superior (standard) rooms feature sleek and stylish decor that mixes gray, black, and white hues with bright, colorful accents like contemporary artwork and burnt orange stripes on the gray-and-white carpets. Walls are light pearl gray with slate gray accent walls. Beds are topped with white duvets, silver decorative pillows, and dark gray bed throws that match the tufted headboards. Black leather chairs, black marble-topped nightstands, and stainless steel desks with black glass tops add contrast. Matching red-brown furniture includes dressers and oval side tables. Some rooms have gray upholstered sofas (Junior Suites have queen sleeper sofas). Past guests have praised the rooms for being clean and generally quiet, but some street noise can be heard at times. They are nicely sized for NYC standards, with Superior Rooms ranging from 175 to 350 square feet and Junior Suites at 400 to 450 square feet. Superior options include King, Queen, Double-Queen, and Double-Full. Bathrooms are equally stylish and spacious, with distinctive, two-tone brown tile floors, gray tile walls, marble-topped vanities, and acrylic shower/tub inserts or walk-in showers. Several rooms have Empire State Building views. Standard amenities include iPod docks, electronic safes, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, 24-hour room service, and Wi-Fi (free only for guests who book through the hotel website, otherwise it incurs a fee). Junior Suites include mini-fridges; these are available in Superior Rooms for a surcharge.
Features
Free continental breakfast, free 24/7 Starbucks, business center, concierge, and off-site parking
The amenities in this boutique hotel are somewhat limited, but they do include a free continental breakfast featuring Starbucks coffee. Breakfast is served in a cramped room with only a few tables, and many guests end up taking it back to their rooms. Free Starbucks and Lipton tea are available in the same room 24/7. Vending machines for snacks and sodas are also on-site. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the hotel, but it’s only free for guests who book directly through the hotel website. Other guests must pay a daily surcharge. The hotel does have a business center with Internet access that guests can use. The front desk operates 24 hours, and concierge and same-day dry cleaning and laundry services are available. The nearest public parking garage is approximately one block away, but hotel guests receive a discount. A music CD library is available for a surcharge. No pets other than service animals are allowed in this nonsmoking hotel.
