Bottom Line

The upper-middle-range Goldstar Resort & Suites offers 56 spacious studios and apartment-style rooms with sitting areas, kitchenettes, and granite bathrooms with large tubs. Conveniently located, the hotel is a five-minute walk to the Promenade des Anglais and about a 15- to 20-minute walk to Old Town. There's a nice rooftop terrace with a covered pool, but the fitness area and sauna are small and disappointing. There's also a bar, restaurant, daily breakfast buffet (for an extra fee). Decor is a bit impersonal, but the property is well-maintained and clean. Travelers seeking a hotel closer to both the water and Old Town might want to check out the Hotel Beau Rivage.

Goldstar Resort & Suites

Scene

Conveniently located all-suite hotel with a terrace and views

The Goldstar Resort & Suites is situated in a cream-colored seven-story building with a curved corner facade featuring mirrored windows. The lobby has a sleek simplicity, with white-tile floors and wood accent walls highlighted by abstract art pieces. Lantern-inspired pendant lights hang over the reception desk, while a long white couch and several upholstered armchairs invite guests to linger -- but the better hangout spot is the seventh-floor terrace, which has loungers, sitting areas, and nice views. While the hotel is well-maintained, the decor can feel both haphazard and bland. The lobby, and the hotel's restaurant in particular, feature a somewhat odd array of sculptures -- silver wild cats, wood toucans, and statues and statuettes of Japanese emperors and jazz musicians. The restaurant also has a Zen-style sand garden, which is at once a little quirky and a little out of place. But the convenient location and spacious apartment-style suites are the draw, and the hotel is popular with tourists, especially couples and families.

Location

Centrally located, a five-minute walk to the Promenade des Anglais and the beach

Goldstar is situated on a narrow, one-way street in the heart of Nice's District of Musicians. It's a five-minute walk to the Promenade des Anglais and the beach, with plenty of restaurants in the immediate area. The Massena Museum is a five-minute walk from the hotel, and the popular shopping street Jean Medecin is about an eight-minute walk. The Cours Saleya market, Old Town (Vieille Ville), the Nice Opera, National Theater of Nice, and Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art are within a 15- to 20-minute walk. The closest bus stop is about a two-minute walk away, and Nice-Ville, the main train station, is about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The Nice Crte d’ Azur Airport is about a half hour away via public transportation, or an 11- to 20-minute drive, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Spacious suites with kitchenettes and roomy granite bathrooms with corner tubs

This all-suite property has 56 spacious rooms -- even the entry-level studio-style suites are more than 300 square feet; the largest Presidential Suite measures more than 750 square feet. Room decor is contemporary but somewhat uninspired, with tile floors, cream-colored walls, wood accents, and couches or armchairs upholstered in brown faux leather. Rooms include desks and chairs, blackout drapes, sitting areas, and wardrobes with storage space and safes. Upgraded rooms might have separate living and dining room areas and extra bedrooms. All suites have kitchenettes, which typically include sinks, stove-top burners, microwaves, mini-fridges, electric tea kettles, and cookware.

Other room amenities include flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Granite bathrooms tend to be spacious and typically have large corner tubs with rainfall showerheads and separate rooms with bidets and toilets. Individually wrapped toiletries and hairdryers are provided.

Rooftop terrace, pool, fitness area, restaurant, and bar

The hotel has a seventh-story terrace with nice views, a wood deck with lounge chairs, a couple of sitting areas, and a covered pool, though the pool's odd shape makes it feel smaller than it actually is. There's also a fitness area, but equipment is limited, and a small sauna. In-room massages are available. There's an on-site bar and restaurant (Le Toucan), but guests find the menu limited. A standard breakfast buffet with hot and cold items is available daily, but it's not included in the room rate. The hotel staff will help arrange events, and on-site meeting rooms can accommodate up to 50 people. The front desk operates 24 hours a day, and staff will help arrange car rentals, laundry service, and childcare. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
