Oyster Hotel Review

A bright and modern upscale hotel that stays busy year-round

This bright and modern hotel stays busy year-round for many reasons. Its proximity to the Canadian Tire Centre and free shuttle to and from the arena makes it popular with hockey fans and concertgoers. Weddings and corporate meetings are big business here, as are golf getaways and spa weekends. Its amenities also make it a favorite staycation destination for many locals. As such, the registration lines, elevators, and bars/restaurants can be quite crowded at peak times. The spacious and airy lobby features two-story glass walls and amber wood paneling in curved patterns that create an upscale ambience. One attractive aspect of this large hotel is the ability to escape the crowds on the beautifully landscaped grounds.

In a quiet setting adjacent to a golf course, about 25 minutes southwest of downtown Ottawa

Most guests bring a car to this hotel that’s located in the quiet suburb of Kanata, southwest of downtown Ottawa. The beautiful setting is adjacent to office complexes and The Marshes Golf Club; many rooms overlook the picturesque course. The Canadian Tire Centre and Tanger Outlet retail complex are reached in about a 10- to 15-minute drive. There are restaurants within three minutes by car. It takes approximately 25 minutes of driving to reach downtown Ottawa and it’s about a 30-minute drive to Ottawa International Airport.

Modern and upscale with minibars, Keurig coffeemakers, and stylish bathrooms

Various shades of gray and red are used in the motif of these modern and upscale rooms that were upgraded with new pillow-top mattresses, furniture, and patterned carpet in 2016. The matching wood furniture has a pleasant maple finish and includes distinctive headboards and oval desks with two chairs and benches. Large windows bring in ample natural light and some rooms have private balconies that overlook the golf course. Rooms are quite spacious, and even lower category Double Queen Rooms offer enough room to include armchairs. Suites of various sizes are available with separate sitting areas and sleeper sofas. Small windows with blinds between the bedrooms and bathrooms make a stylish statement. Amenities are plentiful and include minibars, Keurig coffeemakers, safes, robes, free Wi-Fi, and iPod docking stations.

Bathrooms have gray slate tiles and dark granite-top vanities. Standard rooms feature shower/tub combos, and some Deluxe Rooms and Suites have separate tubs and walk-in showers. Hairdryers and toiletries are provided.

Two pools, full-service spa, golf access, fitness center, shuttle, jazz lounge, and free Wi-Fi

This upscale hotel is packed with resort-style amenities. Two saltwater pools -- indoor and seasonal outdoor -- have adjacent whirlpools and wading pools for kids. Guests have access to the adjacent Marshes Golf Club that offers 27 holes of golf and a putting green. A fleet of free loaner bicycles and helmets are available. Kids are a focus here, with supervised activities and the ZONE 525 Game Room that includes arcade games and a movie theater.

For adult fun, the full-service Au Naturel spa offers an array of salon services and body treatments. It also has men’s and women’s locker rooms with separate saunas. The adjacent Flex Fitness Studio features an impressive 35 pieces of Technogym cardio and weight-training equipment.

The Options Jazz Lounge features nightly live jazz music and a sushi menu. Sushi is also on the menu at the fine-dining Perspectives restaurant that features contemporary Canadian cuisine. B Café at Brookstreet also serves Starbucks coffees and quick bites. Room service is available.

Corporate meetings and weddings are popular here, with free Wi-Fi and over 30,000 square feet of meeting space. For business professionals, a free weekday shuttle runs to surrounding office buildings. On weekends, the shuttle offers service to the Canadian Tire Centre arena and two local retail complexes. Self-parking is available in the hotel’s underground garage, but it’s not free. Pets are welcome with a surcharge.
