Walking through one of the grand white archways as they enter the property, guests encounter the lush, even by Port Douglas standards, gardens, where not a single leaf is out of place. The lobby, with a soaring ceiling and white-stone walls creating a light and breezy atmosphere, is also immaculate. The hotel attracts families and honeymooners, and it's not uncommon to see unsupervised kids darting to and fro, which might annoy those seeking a romantic retreat.

Situated at the upscale northern end of Port Douglas, the hotel benefits from its proximity to Four Mile Beach, which is about a five-minute walk away. The town's main shopping strip, Macrossan Street, is less than a 10-minute walk, while Davidson Street, which is home to several restaurants, is even closer. The hotel is located at the beach end of Mowbray Street, which is relatively quiet and runs east-west. The Cairns Airport is about an hour from Port Douglas by car.

The standard rooms at Peppers Beach Club are called Spa Suites and, as the name suggests, have spa baths on the balconies. The suites themselves have simple white walls adorned with abstract art, and are decorated in soothing shades of cream. They include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with free movies, room service, and minibars. Bathrooms are on the small side but are bright and clean, with white marble detailing and the hotel's own brand of toiletries. The apartments (available with one, two, or three bedrooms) have the same look as the Spa Suites, but are larger and have small kitchens and laundry rooms with washers and dryers. The apartments at Peppers receive the same daily housekeeping service as the regular Spa Suites. All units have balconies, some with barbecues or plunge pools.

A sprawling lagoon-like pool, spa, and casual restaurant
The centerpiece -- literally -- of Peppers is the large pool, around which the resort's various buildings are clustered. On one side of the pool, a small beach has been created using white sand from the nearby Whitsundays. On the other, many of the hotel's ground-floor rooms have their own private access. The pool is surrounded by cabanas and includes a swim-up bar. Many families spend all day at the pool.The hotel is bolstered by two excellent facilities: the Exclusive Spa, which offers a wide range of treatments, and the Sublime Bar & Grill, which specializes in seafood with Asian influences. Both are extremely popular, and advance booking is recommended. Reception is staffed 24 hours a day, and there's a concierge and a modern fitness center.
