Bottom Line

The 56-room Ipanema Inn is a two-and-a-half-pearl property whose best feature is its location, just a two-minute walk from the beach and close to shops, dining, and nightlife. Its spartan, minimalistic rooms are on the small side, but they are modern, clean, and come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes. Some have views of the beach, and suites add terraces or balconies. The on-site restaurant is highly regarded, and it serves a free breakfast buffet daily, as well as lunch and dinner. For travelers who want to be in the thick of the action and close to the beach, Ipanema Inn is a solid choice. It's worth checking out Arpoador Inn, though, a mid-range property that sits directly on the beach closer to Copacabana. It has a bar and similar rates.

Scene

Simple, clean hotel near the beach in the center of Ipanema

While this hotel doesn't exactly stand out from the competition in Ipanema -- there are any number of straightforward budget and mid-range spots all around -- there's enough here to make a stay here pleasant. Glass windows and doors span the ground level of this eight-story building, and passersby on the street can peek into the restaurant. Inside, the lobby is small, with just the front desk and a couple of chairs. Female Brazilian dolls add a splash of cheer, while hallways to guest rooms are narrow and plain. It's a calm hotel in a busy area, but most guests don't spend much time there, opting instead to be out and about exploring and hanging out on the beach. All sorts of travelers make their way here, with couples in the majority.

Location

A two-minute walk from Ipanema Beach, surrounded by shops, dining, and nightlife

The hotel is located between the two principal streets of Ipanema (Vieira Souto and Prudente de Moraes), near the beach, bars, restaurants, and shops and surrounded by intense nightlife (and, unfortunately, car traffic). The beach is just two minutes away on foot, and Barthodomeu, a well-known eating spot, is also a short walk from the hotel. For other beach alternatives, the Leblon seafront is a 15-minute walk from the hotel, while bustling Copacabana will take five to 10 minutes to reach by taxi. The Forte de Copacabana military history museum can be reached in 10 minutes by car.  Corcovado Mountain, where the famed Christ the Redeemer statue is found, is about 35 minutes away by car, or an hour and 45 minutes by public transportation. Sugarloaf Mountain is a half-hour drive from the hotel. Rio's airport is 30 minutes to an hour away by car, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Small, simple rooms with flat-screen TVs and minibars, suites have beach-view terraces

Rooms are small and simple, with a modern take on 1950s design that features clean-lined Brazilian furniture with retro silhouettes plus stark white walls, linens, and window coverings. Tan accent walls don't do much to capitalize on the funky furnishings, neither does the lone piece of art in some rooms, but they are clean, bright, and pleasant. Amenities include wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, minibars, free Wi-FI, and safes. Small tiled bathrooms come with robes, hairdryers, and toiletries. Two-level suites offer two bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus a furnished terrace, some with views of the beach. They also have Nespresso coffeemakers, and slightly upgraded design details like plants and striped carpets.

Features

Free breakfast at well-regarded restaurant and free beach gear

There's not much in the way of features at this small, simple inn. The highly regarded Quiteria restaurant serves modern local cuisine with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. It's a simple space with an open kitchen and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto Rua Maria Quiteria. Cushy yellow leather seating lines one wall. All meals are served, including a free breakfast that's a combination of continental buffet items and a la carte options like eggs and meats. Beach chairs and towels are available for free, and the hotel can arrange tour and laundry services. Wi-Fi is also free throughout the property.
