Cons
  • Guests complain about
    bathrooms being less than clean

  • Wi-Fi is inconsistent and limited to one device

  • Some rooms have old,
    tube-style TVs

  • No gym or on-site parking

Bottom Line

The best
thing about Giglio Dell’ Opera is its convenient location near the Piazza della
Repubblica and the Termini train station. The homey mid-range hotel has 61
rooms with classic charm, but some rooms have tube-style
TVs, iffy Wi-Fi, and bathrooms that could use more attention to
cleanliness. There’s no full restaurant on-site, but there’s a bar
and a parlor where guests can enjoy a coffee or cocktail. Breakfast is free but has limited options. Guests may want to consider Hotel Camelia, a mid-range hotel that's near Termini train station and, while somewhat pricer, has fresher rooms.

Scene

Homey, mid-range hotel with large parlor done in classic decor

Giglio
Dell’ Opera resides in a beautiful building built in 1897. Standing five stories tall, the pale-peach structure has classically arched windows, wrought-iron window bars, and ornate carvings. Inside
the glass doors, red ropes flank the marble steps covered in red carpeting, which guests must walk up to reach
the reception area, an open room with a rounded wooden front desk, an elegant chandelier, polished wooden floors, and a few antique pieces of furniture. The breakfast buffet is served in a simply decorated room with terra-cotta tile floors and small round tables with white and blue tablecloths. Guests can order
a cappuccino or cocktail from the small bar and enjoy it while seated on a bar stool or relax in the parlor with wooden
floors, floor-length green curtains, tapestry rugs, and a collection of
furnishings including green-and-red fabric chairs, a leather settee, and low
coffee tables. The framed artwork in the parlor and throughout the hallways is
a nice visual touch. Guests are mainly tourist couples, along with some families, who want a convenient location and a basic place to stay.

Location

In Rome's historic center, close to the Termini station and Piazza della Repubblica

The hotel
is located in the busy historic center of Rome with plenty of restaurants,
shops, and cafes within walking distance. The Roma Termini train station, Opera
house, and Piazza della Repubblica are within a five-minute walk, and Santa
Maria Maggiore Square, where sightseeing buses stop, is within a 10-minute walk.
The Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps are all within a 20-minute walk or 15-minute
metro ride from the hotel. Ciampino Airport is a 30-minute drive, and Leonardo
da Vinci Airport is around 35 minutes by car.

Rooms

Simple rooms with classic decor

Rooms
at Giglio Dell’ Opera have classic decor including wooden floors, candelabra
chandeliers, and floor-length curtains. Gilded-framed classical art and mirrors are nice,
decorative touches. Wooden bureaus afford space for hanging up clothes, while
wooden desks hold old, tube-style TVs or more modern flat-screen TVs. Rooms
also have safes, mini-fridges (minibars on request), and free Wi-Fi -- though the Wi-Fi is shaky and limited to one device. Some rooms have more space and sofas. Bathrooms are dated and done in clay-colored and cream tile; they have bidets and small, stand-up showers, and
guests complain that bathrooms are in need of better cleaning. There are no tea/coffee facilities.

Features

Free limited breakfast, bar, and parlor

There aren’t a lot of amenities at the Giglio Dell’
Opera. There’s no full restaurant on-site, but a free breakfast is provided
including ham, cheese, and pastries. There’s a bar where guests can order
cocktails and coffee, and a large parlor offers a spot to relax. Garage parking is available for a fee, and small
pets are allowed. Concierge services are available.
