Bottom Line

Hotel Art is a 46-room, upper-middle-range boutique hotel that's located around the corner from the Spanish Steps -- most of Rome’s iconic sights are within walking distance as well. The focus here is on design, and common spaces have a quirky, artsy blend of old and new that may not work for everybody. Rooms are a little more understated, with just a couple of colorful accents and up-to-date amenities such as free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Though it doesn't have the features of nearby The First Luxury Art Hotel, Hotel Art's cardio room, good free breakfast buffet, and charming courtyard add value to a stay here.

Hotel Art by the Spanish Steps

Scene

A small, artsy boutique hotel with quirky decor and charming courtyard

Housed in an old college, the 46-room Hotel Art focuses on design and art, creating a quirky vibe that stands out against much of the competition. The lobby is located in what used to be the school’s chapel and still features some original architectural details, including beautiful vaulted ceilings and arched doorways and windows. Tiny golden stars painted on Aegean blue ceilings are Byzantine-inspired touches, while funky nest lamps add some contemporary style. The most striking features in the lobby are two large egg-shaped structures that house the front desk and the concierge desk. Dark blue chairs and dark brown furniture dot the bar, which is separated from the reception area by wooden screens. An arched door opens onto a small seating area with raspberry floors decorated with a line-drawn floor plan of the Pantheon; there are also several original works of art by local artists on display. A side door opens onto a small, charming

courtyard with colorful furniture and plants. Guests here are predominantly couples, though families and groups of friends pass through as well.

Location

On a quiet, quaint street in the heart of Rome

Located on charming Via Margutta, the hotel is within an easy walk of most of Rome’s major historic attractions, including the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, and Piazza Navona. All take 15 minutes or less to reach on foot. Piazza di Spagna, home to the Spanish Steps, is less than a five-minute walk from the hotel, just two blocks away. Although the area is touristy and busy, the street itself is quiet and quaint, with cobblestones, plants and low buildings. There are plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars within a couple of blocks, and the Spagna Metro stop is just a few minutes from the property. Termini train station, Vatican City, the Campidoglio, the Colosseo and Trastevere neighborhood can all be reached by public transportation within 20 minutes. Allow for up to 50 minutes to arrive at the international airport, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Small, contemporary rooms with up-to-date amenities; most are a little dark

The hotel has 46 small rooms, all featuring contemporary decor in earth tones, a pop of vivid colors, wood floors, and Florentine leather headboards. The look is sharp, modern, and simple, and there's an abundance of hardwood and wood veneer furniture in rich chestnut tones throughout, though we did spot some wear and scuff marks on many pieces. Each room also has a signature piece of art that's a replica of various famous canvases throughout the years. All rooms are clean and have flat-screen TVs with wireless keyboards, free Wi-Fi, minibars, and air-conditioning -- but most units are a little dark. Bathrooms have tiles in bright colors matching the accents in the bedroom, shower/tub combos, toiletries, and modern round sinks over dark wood countertops with sleek fixtures. Suites have a separate living area and offer perks like jetted tubs and coffeemakers. The street is mostly quiet, but light sleepers may want to request a courtyard-facing room.
