Bottom Line

The Rome River Inn is a two-and-a-half pearl inn located in a residential corner of central Rome. Situated across two floors in a typical apartment building near the river, the 11 rooms are surprisingly spacious with giant beds and bright, modern decor. One of the suites has a whirlpool tub for two. The large rooms come at the expense of common areas, which are limited to small and simple nooks for free breakfast and coffee. However, the location on the edge of the historic center and across the river from the Vatican means that many restaurants, bars, and major landmarks (like Campo de’ Fiori) are available within a 10-minute walk. Those looking for an equally central location with more Old World charm should consider the Navona Gallery & Garden Suites

Rome River Inn

Scene

Modern and bright rooms in an unassuming apartment building

Around the corner from one of Rome’s most exclusive streets (with multiple five-pearl hotels), the Rome River Inn is a small and more affordable upbeat inn alternative. The public areas are modest and cater to self-sufficient sightseers looking for a comfortable home base from which to easily walk to most of Rome’s major sites on either side of the river. Apart from the tiny reception area set with orchids and two gray chairs, there's just a pleasant, but narrow, breakfast room decorated with Italian photographs and a flat-screen TV.

Location

Nestled in a curve along the Tiber River, not far from Campo de’ Fiori

The Rome River Inn is located along the Lungotevere, one street off of high-end Via Giulia. The busy road, which serves as a major thoroughfare following the curves of the river, winds along the edge of Rome’s historic center. The inn is situated in a quiet bend and is well placed for visiting both the Vatican (20-minute walk) and many of Rome’s other must-see sites in the historic center. It's a five-minute walk to Castel Sant’Angelo’s elaborately decorated bridge, and about eight minutes on foot from Campo de’ Fiori. While there are no nearby metro stops, public buses serve the area along the river and Corso Vittorio. Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport is about a 35 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Clean design and large rooms

The standard rooms and suites at Rome River Inn are unexpectedly spacious. King-size beds, modern private bathrooms, and outsized photos of Rome help to fill the sprawling spaces. One suite has a two-person whirlpool located in one corner for soaking after a day of sightseeing. Other notable rooms include the Deluxe, which has the best river views. While all rooms face a busy road along the Tiber, they are surprisingly quiet thanks to soundproofing and insulated windows.

The rooms all feature modest flat-screen TVs with a broad range of international satellite channels. There is also a safe in every room, as well as air-conditioning and a mini-bar. Guests have access to coffee machines located in the breakfast area, rather than in the room. Most rooms have large showers, but some have jetted bathtubs. Toiletries and hairdryers are provided.

Features

A simple free breakfast buffet, but no other real features on-site

While the rooms at the Rome River Inn are notably spacious, the common areas in the hotel are somewhat lacking. The breakfast room is narrow, but does offer a daily morning meal that is included in the booking price. The buffet style breakfast is fairly standard, with a mix of Italian pastries, cheese, cured meats, yogurt, and cereal. Rooms on the second floor also have access to a small lounge area with a coffee machine. The front desk can help with booking private transfers or tours, but there are no other real features or dining options available. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
