Bottom Line

The 43-room Tritone Hotel is a mid-range option with an ideal location in the historic city center. Guests can walk to the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and Pantheon in just a few minutes, as well as many restaurants and bars. Metro and bus stations also are nearby. Rooms offer all of the necessities such as flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and electric kettles, but Standard Rooms could benefit from the renovations that Superiors have already had. Some rooms have balconies with views of the city. A free breakfast buffet is served in a sunny rooftop breakfast room with views of the city, but that's about it for features. For a similarly priced alternative in the area, travelers could check out the Hotel delle Nazioni, which has an on-site restaurant and bar.

Scene

Simple hotel for on-the-go tourists with rooftop breakfast room offering great views of city

This little hotel is housed in a 1971 five-story building that was previously used as private residences. It shows Italian style throughout, starting with its stone facade, shuttered windows, and red awning over the entrance. Guests must walk up several stairs to reach the marble reception area, which could be difficult for less mobile travelers. It does have a small vintage elevator that takes guests from the first floor to the fifth, where the sunny and bright breakfast room looks out to panoramic views of the city. Other than that, the hotel doesn't have much to offer in the way of common space. But its ideal location and reasonable rates are a winning combination for many travelers who want to be close to major attractions. It draws couples, families, groups, individuals, and businesspeople.

Location

Ideal location in historic center, a short walk from Trevi Fountain and other attractions

This hotel is situated in Rome's historic city center, a four-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain, six minutes on foot from the famous Spanish Steps, and a nine-minute walk from the Pantheon. A bus stop is a minute's walk away, and the metro is about 10 minutes away on foot, providing easy access to other attractions in the area. Immediately around the hotel are many tourist shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, ice cream shops, pizzerias, and the like. The Colosseum is about a 22-minute walk away, or less than 10 minutes by public transportation, and the Vatican is about 30 minutes away by car or public transportation. Expect a 50-minute drive to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, or about an hour by public transportation.

Rooms

From worn to fresh, with features like air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, some with balconies

The hotel offers Standard and Superior Rooms, as well as one Suite. Superior Rooms have been more recently renovated and are more stylish, with wood accents on walls and furniture, and a modern, minimalist style. Color schemes are mostly brown and white, but bold modern portraits add color to some. Beds are situated on modern platform frames and are dressed in Italian linens. All are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, tea/coffee makers, stocked minibars, work desks, and free Wi-Fi. Double, Triple, and Quadruple options are available. Modern bathrooms in renovated rooms are tiled in Travertine marble and come with bidets, hairdryers, showers or shower/tub combos, and toiletries. Some rooms look out onto the street and can pick up noise, and others face the quieter courtyard. Some have balconies furnished with marble-topped wrought-iron tables and chairs. Since some Standard Rooms have yet to be renovated and are showing signs of wear, guests should check the conditions before committing.

Features

Free breakfast buffet, guided tours, pet-friendly, free Wi-Fi

Aside from its great location and well-equipped rooms, the hotel doesn't have much to offer. A free American-style breakfast buffet with hot and cold selections is served daily in the sunny breakfast room on the rooftop. It's a casual space with windows on three sides offering panoramic views of the city. The hotel can help organize guided bus and walking tours of the city. Pets are allowed at no charge, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
