Bottom Line

The two-pearl Katerina and John’s is a solid, somewhat unexciting budget hotel on Santorini’s eastern coast in Perissa. Its chief draw is its location on the bus line to Fira, a short walk from tavernas, bars, shops, and five minutes to the black-sand Perissa Beach. Facilities are limited to a small seasonal swimming pool, breakfast (for a fee) with hot items, and free Wi-Fi and parking. The 18 rooms (the largest can sleep six people) have a simple, uncluttered and dated look. While all rooms come with mini-fridges, they do lack electric kettles. TVs are small tube-style models and there are occasional issues accessing the free Wi-Fi. The nearby Stelios Place is closer to the beach, and has a poolside bar and slightly nicer rooms, but it’s a bit more expensive.

Katerina and John’s Hotel

Scene

Typical Santorini budget tourist hotel near Perissa Beach

Katerina and John’s Hotel is housed in a white-colored building with blue doors and shutters, with Cycladic architecture typical of the island. The entrance is lined with potted plants and trees. Katerina and John’s draws mostly young budget travelers for its inexpensive rates, outdoor pool, and location near the beach and bus to Fira. The centerpiece of the hotel in the summer high season is the outdoor swimming pool. Guests relax and take in sun on a lounger on the deck, and also sit at tables; some located in a shaded alcove. Guests spend much of their time away from the hotel during the day, particularly at the black-sand Perissa Beach, which is known for its sunrises. The hotel is family owned, and the atmosphere is low-key, warm, and friendly.

Location

About a five-minute walk from black-sand Perissa beach, bus stop to Fira in front of the hotel

Katerina and John’s Hotel is located on the busy main road running through Perissa on the eastern side of Santorini. A bus with service to Fira stops right outside the hotel. A 24-hour mini-market, tavernas, and bars are within a short walk of the hotel, and the Aegean Sea, black-sand Perissa Beach, promenade, and Mediterranean Dive Club are a little more than a five-minute walk. Santorini Water Park is also five minutes on foot. The area with Red Beach and the Akrotiri settlement from the Minoan Bronze Age is about a 15-minute drive. Kamari with its beach, bars, and open-air cinema is about 20 minutes by car.

The town of Fira is a 20-minute drive or 40 minutes by bus. Here, visitors will find the Old Port, Museum of Prehistoric Thira, Three Bells of Fira with its distinctive blue dome, and Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral with views of the sea, sunset, and Santorini caldera (submerged volcano). Katerina and John’s is 20 minute by car from both Santorini (Thira) International Airport and Athinios Port Ferry Terminal. The hotel also provides transfer to the airport and ferry terminal (for a fee, free for stays longer than two nights).

Rooms

Budget rooms with a spartan look, kitchenettes are available

Guest rooms at Katerina and John’s are spacious and clean, but have a spare and slightly dated look. The whitewashed walls are largely bare, but the overall visual energy of the rooms is enhanced by the blue doors and wood furniture and trim. Rooms get good natural light and some have balconies furnished with tables and chairs. All 18 rooms come with air-conditioning, safes, and mini-fridges, but they don’t have electric kettles. Some rooms have kitchenettes with dining tables, hot plates, sinks, cookware, and tableware. The televisions are small tube-style TVs, that likely aren't worth turning on. Wi-Fi is free and generally accessible in the rooms, but the signal is usually strongest around the pool. Some bathrooms are small, with limited counter space around the sink, and some bathrooms have issues with cleanliness and maintenance. Showers don’t have curtains and shower heads are mounted on waist level, meaning guests have to use a hand-held spray function to shower.
