Bottom Line

Formerly a Hilton property, The DeSoto is a stylish, upscale hotel that places visitors within easy walking distance of attractions, bars, shops, and restaurants in the Historic District. Its 246 rooms are fresh from a 2017 full renovation, featuring quality beds, spacious marble bathrooms, and solid amenities such as free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Mini-fridges, though, are only available in higher-tier units, which also offer the best views. 1540 Room is an elegant spot for a Southern meal made with locally sourced ingredients, while Edgar’s Proof & Provision is a more casual option with an all-day menu and cocktails. The outdoor pool, complete with a spacious deck housing fire pits and a bar, offers plenty of space to relax on a warm day. For something with more local charm, consider The Kehoe House – a Boutique Inn

Scene

Large hotel with a mix of historic elements and an extensive modern art collection

Located right in the heart of Savannah’s Historic District, The DeSoto stands out at first sight for its size. While most of the buildings in the area are low mansions and small, historic structures, the property stands 15 stories tall above famous Madison Square. The DeSoto was first opened in 1890 and later purchased by the Hilton hotel chain, which owned it until 2004. After multimillion dollar renovations in 2008 and more recently in 2017, the property is now a sophisticated, upscale option in Savannah. Interiors offer an eye-catching mix of original features -- such as gorgeous crystal chandeliers, white wood paneling, and terra-cotta tiles -- and modern elements, in particular an extensive art collection by students, alumni, and faculty of the Savannah College of Art & Design. Though some may find the hotel lacking in local charm, most guests -- which range from business travelers to couples of all ages -- seem to appreciate the fresh, contemporary feel. As in most other properties in town, rates vary widely throughout the year and can be quite steep in the summer. However, The DeSoto’s prices aren’t exorbitant for the most part, though valet parking (no self-parking available) does add up. Travelers seeking something more romantic in the Historic District may want to compare rates at The Dresser Palmer House, which offers free breakfast and free wine and cheese hours. Mansion on Forsyth Park, Autograph Collection is a solid alternative for those seeking something more luxurious, while the Planters Inn is easier on the budget and features charming rooms with four-poster beds and traditional Southern decor.

Location

In the heart of the Historic District, near parks, historic attractions, and shops

The DeSoto has an excellent location right in the center of Savannah’s Historic District, overlooking Madison Square and walking distance to many restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions. The famous Forsyth Park is just a 10-minute walk south, and other outdoor spaces can be found just minutes from the front door. Local attractions found within a 10-minute walk of the hotel include the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, the Roundhouse Railroad Museum, Telfair Museum, City Market, and the Riverfront area. The Savannah Golf Club can be reached in about 10 minutes by car, while the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is just a 20-minute drive away.

Rooms

Spacious, stylish rooms with marble bathrooms; many have balconies with great city views

The hotel has 246 spacious rooms spread over 15 floors. All were fully renovated in 2017 and are fresh, done up in a modern style that combines dark-wood floors, chrome accents, and pops of blue that stand out against the neutral palette. Original artworks by students of the Savannah College of Art & Designed can be seen throughout, and big windows let in lots of light. Rooms range from large standard King units to One-Bedroom Suites with up to three-and-a-half bathrooms and four balconies. Though views are great from most rooms and suites, units on higher floors offer sweeping views of the city center. Many rooms have furnished balconies. Also note that those on lower floors may suffer from street noise.Standard amenities are correct for the price and include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and single-cup coffeemakers -- but mini-fridges are only available in higher-tier rooms and suites, as are microwaves. Sotherly’s signature beds get great reviews from past guests and are topped with 100-percent cotton sheets and down duvets and pillows. USB charging points are available on desks or bedside tables in all rooms, and suites feature sofa beds in separate living areas. Bathrooms are spacious and upscale, with marble finishes, backlit mirrors, glass walk-in showers (shower/tub combos in rooms with two double beds), and ample counter space. Hairdryers and selections of eco-friendly Olive Branch Botanicals toiletries are provided in all rooms.

Features

Three dining options, outdoor pool, fitness center, and meeting space

The DeSoto is home to two popular restaurants, including the elegant 1540 Room -- serving up farm-to-table Southern cuisine -- and the casual Edgar’s Proof & Provision, which offers cocktails, its own bourbon, and an all-day menu with international options. Additionally, Buffalo Bayou, a small coffee corner in the lobby, serves hot and cold drinks along with pastries and sandwiches throughout the day. The outdoor pool is located on the second-floor rooftop deck, and offers lots of loungers, a couple of fire pits, and a bar with handcrafted cocktails. The fitness center is outfitted with enough cardio and strength-training equipment for a full workout. On the downside, there's no spa here. The hotel also offers 20,000 square feet of event space, including a large ballroom and 11 smaller meeting rooms -- all with audiovisual equipment. Event catering services are available on request, from coffee-break treats to full meals. There is no self-parking here, but valet service is available for a daily fee.
