Bottom Line

The historic Olympic Hotel, part of the luxury Fairmont chain since 2003, is a Seattle institution. It has a grand lobby with architecture that evokes the 1920s (the hotel opened in 1924), an impressive clientele list that includes JFK, and one of the oldest oyster bars in the city. Numerous property features include a spa, an indoor pool, a well-equipped fitness center, and an elegant, upscale restaurant. Rooms feature large flat-screen TVs and classic decor (mahogany headboards, floral curtains, and striped wallpaper), but they're less luxurious than one might expect, and some may find the style a bit stuffy. Like other properties in the Fairmont chain, the hotel accommodates both families and pets: The restaurants and room service feature kids' menus; amenities include children-sized robes and baby amenities; and dogs and cats under 40 pounds can stay at the hotel for a one-time fee. There is a fee for Wi-Fi, but members of the Fairmont Presidents Club do not have to pay.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hardly a car, taxi, or bus needed at this centrally located downtown hotel

Map of The Fairmont Olympic Seattle

Without being on the waterfront (a coveted Seattle location), the Fairmont still manages to take firm advantage of all that downtown Seattle has to offer -- no car or transit needed. It's minutes away from the Washington State Convention Center, and literally surrounded on all sides by shopping, theater, and dining attractions. Guests can walk to musicals at the 5th Avenue Theater, arcade games at Gameworks for the kids, and shopping at Nordstrom and Pacific Place shopping center. Westlake Center is equally close, with its full-on food court and access to the Monorail, the iconic elevated train that whisks you over to the Seattle Center (home of the Space Needle) in a mere two minutes.

  • 20-minute drive to Sea-Tac International Airport (about $32 to $45 by taxi), or 48 minutes by light rail
  • 3-minute walk to Seattle Art Museum
  • 3-minute walk to Benaroya Hall (Seattle Symphony)
  • 5-minute walk to the A.C.T. Theater
  • 5-minute walk to 5th Avenue Theater
  • 6-minute walk to the Westlake Mall (with two-minute transit to Seattle Center, and Light Rail transit to Sea-Tac airport for $2.50)
  • 7-minute walk to Pacific Place shopping center
  • 7-minute walk to the Washington State Convention Center
  • 8-minute walk to Pike Place Market
  • 10-minute walk to ferries
