The Rose Apple Boutique Bed & Breakfast is an 11-room bougainvillea-clad property within walking distance of Siem Reap’s main tourist area, but away from the noise and clamor. Pub Street is 10 minutes away on foot, and Sok San Road -- around the corner -- also has plenty of restaurants and shops. This three-pearl property is well-liked by past guests, even if it's humble, and the attentive owners are on-site most days. There are more features than guests might expect of a mid-range bed-and-breakfast of this size, like a pool, bar and all-day restaurant. Rooms are simple and light, with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, but they lack mini-fridges and bathrooms are small. It’s worth comparing rates at The Golden Temple across the river, which has a larger pool and cheerful decor.
Scene
A small and sweet bed-and-breakfast with helpful owners and simple style
One of the things you hear most about this property is that it feels worlds away from hectic Siem Reap, despite being quite central. That impression starts right away, as a dirt track leads to a leafy bougainvillea-shrouded building. Inside, guests will find shiny stone floors, dark wood, Khmer artwork, and tree trunks displaying local bric-a-brac. The lobby is more like the hallway of someone’s home, with a solid dark wood staircase dominating the space. Though it’s small, the property makes the most of its space. The main outdoor area here is almost taken up entirely by the courtyard-style swimming pool, where comfy sun loungers are shaded by bamboo. There are some attentive details, too, like Belgian beers served at the open-air poolside bar (one half of the owner-couple is Belgian) and a simple restaurant where light meals are served for all three meals. Above the main pool area, a terrace with ornate railings and flower-strewn pergolas is a lovely spot to relax. All of this is only enhanced by the frequently on-site owners, who are incredibly helpful. The property is popular with a range of travelers, including couples, families, and solo travelers prioritizing a quieter stay.
Location
Off Sok San Road, a 10-minute walk from the tourist-friendly Night Market and Pub Street
While not right in the heart of things, The Rose Apple Boutique Bed & Breakfast is located about a 10-minute walk from the Night Market and Pub Street area of central Siem Reap. Although it’s walkable to the tourist hangouts, many guests prefer to take a cheap tuk-tuk ride as Siem Reap doesn't have well-paved sidewalks. The hotel sits down a fairly secluded dirt track that runs off the busy backpacker thoroughfare of Sok San Road, with lots of small bars, restaurants, and travel agencies nearby. It’s surrounded by similar size hotels and houses, but mostly quiet. The temples of Angkor and the airport are both around a 15- to 20-minute drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Simple, light, and traditional rooms, many with a pool view, but small bathrooms
Rooms at The Rose Apple are bright and basic, with cream-tiled floors and dark wood accents creating a simple and traditional feel. They’re compact, but the charming wooden window frames let in plenty of natural light. Amenities include reliable air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, plus basic coffee- and tea-making facilities. It’s a shame there are no mini-fridges to keep drinks cool. Fully-tiled bathrooms have walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads (and good water pressure -- not a given in Cambodia), but they are small. There’s little difference between the room categories -- it comes down to twin or double beds, and whether or not they have a pool view.
Features
More than guests might expect from a small bed-and-breakfast, like a pool and simple restaurant
There are more features at The Rose Apple than guests might expect of a bed-and-breakfast of this size. The hub of the property is the courtyard-style saltwater pool, where the bar -- specializing in Belgian beers -- and simple restaurant serving up local and Western dishes are also located. The Belgian fries from the restaurant are a particular hit. A simple breakfast of fruit, yogurt, pancakes, and eggs is included in the rates. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Airport transfers by tuk-tuk are included in the rates, and guests can hire bikes for a small fee. It's worth biking to the Angkor temples on at least one day during your stay.
