Bottom Line

A good pick for business travelers, Tokyo Marriott Hotel is an upscale chain hotel 12 minutes' walk from Shinagawa station. The hotel has a breakfast buffet for a fee, a grill, and two formal Japanese restaurants on-site, and there’s a beautiful garden outside with water features. Renovated in 2013, the 249 rooms at the hotel are clean and modern with minibars and a cool palette. Access to an executive lounge with drinks and snacks is available for a fee (included for guests in Executive Rooms). There aren’t many attractions around the hotel, though, so it may not be the best choice for everyone. An alternative could be Royal Park Hotel The Shiodome, an upscale property conveniently located downtown within walking distance of Tsukiji Fish Market and two metro stations.

Tokyo Marriott Hotel

Scene

Modern chain hotel popular with business travelers

With water fountains, decorative ponds, leafy trees, and stone pathways, the garden at Tokyo Marriott Hotel is a gorgeous setting in which to enjoy the (urban) outdoors. Inside, the spacious lobby is an atrium-style space with sky-high windows and glass ceilings. Stylish floor lamps illuminate dark wood tables and high-backed off-white armchairs, creating a large seating area where guests can enjoy a drink from the lobby bar underneath the atrium ceiling. Elsewhere, vast seating areas with light-wood-paneled walls and plush violet seating make for serene, if corporate, spaces where guests can relax. The Executive Lounge is located on the first floor and open to guests staying in Executive Rooms. The hotel caters to business travelers as well as private events with nine meeting rooms and a modern, ultra-white wedding chapel on-site. Rooms are divided between two separate towers, and guests can hear the nearby train in some of the lower hallways.

Location

Residential area, a 12-minute walk to Shinagawa Station

The hotel is located in a residential area, and there aren’t many attractions near the hotel. Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, an art museum in an impressive, former private residence, is only a five-minute walk away, and some of the foreign embassies are nearby. It’s a 12-minute walk to Shinagawa Station, and the hotel has a free shuttle that will take guests there. A trip to the Shinagawa Aquarium is around a 30-minute ride on public transportation. Shinagawa is one of the city’s leading business districts and home to a long list of corporate headquarters. Haneda Airport is around 20 minutes' drive, and Narita International Airport is about one hour away by car. The hotel is also located near National Route 15, which connects Tokyo to Yokohama in about 30 minutes.

Rooms

Small, modern rooms renovated in 2013

The room we saw at Tokyo Marriott Hotel was, like most in the area, on the small side. Some rooms offer impressive city views. Rooms were renovated in 2013, and decor is modern and fresh, including stylish gray carpeting and sleek, white cabinets and headboards. Violet and pink accents are used sparingly and lend nice pops of color in the otherwise muted spaces. All rooms are equipped with electric kettles, minibars, ironing facilities, and flat-screen TVs. Snacks, bottles of wine, and wine glasses are also provided (for use with fees). Wi-Fi is available for a fee. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos, marbled sinks, and generous amenity kits with Thann toiletries, razors, and toothbrushes. Bathrobes and slippers are provided.
