Bottom Line

Located in the square of a once flourishing spa town, the upscale, 50-room Grand Hotel Terme has probably seen better days. A decline in the area's tourism has led to the closing of quite a few local hotels -- many of which still stand within the town square next to Hotel Terme. The property may be in a central location for exploring Chianciano and other Tuscan towns, but it mainly caters to those looking to partake of its extensive wellness center. However, if you aren't interested in soaking in the spa or sweating it out in the sauna, it may be wise to shop around as there have been some complaints of cleanliness in both common areas and rooms.

Grand Hotel Terme

Scene

Old building with updated look that sticks to its health service roots

Grand Hotel Terme is one of the surviving hotels in Chianciano’s town square. The interior of the property is quite modern. The large lobby sports wooden floors, a grand piano atop an oriental rug, sculptures on podiums, and sleek leather furniture -- all within a classy neutral color scheme. White walls feature large mirrors and a few frames of art, while high multi-level ceilings with recessed lighting give the space a slight museum-quality vibe. Hallways tend to be a bit more basic, with pale walls and red carpeting leading to bright white guest-room doors.

The most colorful area of the hotel is definitely the small wine bar. Outfitted with colorful leather and zebra print couches and glass tables, the area also has bottles of wine on display (and for sale). The vibe returns to upscale casual in the restaurant, where there’s a reprise of neutral color schemes and elegant furnishings. Outside, the grounds are green with landscaped trees, potted plants, and flowers.

Location

In the town square, allowing guests to easily explore immediate area; long drives necessary for other locales

Set off a road with hotel-specific car access only, Grand Hotel Terme is conveniently located within the town square, making it a good place for those who want to explore the area by foot. Surrounded by typical Tuscan countryside, the hotel’s hill location provides a striking vantage point. Most other areas of Tuscany can be reached within 60-90 minutes by car, while reaching Rome requires a two-hour drive or slightly shorter train ride. The closest airport is in Florence, about 90 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Room decor varies, with some spaces more modern; Deluxe Tuscan Room is best choice

Not all of the hotel's 50 rooms have been updated, leaving spaces with a range of styles and features. To ensure the best quality stay, be sure to confirm you are booking a contemporary room offering decorative headboards, plush beds with hypo-allergenic bedding, and floor-to-ceiling windows. All rooms have air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs, while only some have balconies and hot tubs.

If you can snag the Deluxe Room-Tuscan Style, you can experience walls with stone accents, furniture in an antique mode, and tons of space. Fully tiled bathrooms vary in decor as well, but all include showers, bidets, and an assortment of toiletries.

Features

Extensive range of wellness features; kid-friendly activities and pet-ready rooms offered as well

Grand Hotel Terme's most notable feature is its comprehensive wellness and spa center. While guests have commented on the cold temperature of the outdoor pool, the indoor pool -- complete with a saltwater depurative system -- is kept at a constant 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but don't let the soaking stop there. Inside the large wellness center, guests can run the gauntlet of restorative pampering. This spa is one of the best on the block, consisting of nine rooms for massages and beauty treatments, a Finnish chromotherapy sauna, a Turkish bath, an emotional shower (where water, color, and aroma combine to create relaxation), a hot tub, and a tiny fitness room, among other options.

Guests can also taste local and regional vinos at the snazzy Il Pampano d’Oro wine bar, dine at Belle Vue restaurant, or order room service. For families there’s also a daily program of activities for kids, and anyone traveling with animals can rest easy as the hotel has pet-ready rooms.
