Bottom Line

The general ambience and attitude of the Villa Roma Imperiale mirrors the surrounding neighborhood of the same name: sophisticated and upscale. Aromatic and well-tended gardens are a real highlight, especially if you opt for an outdoor massage, and the pool area is a great place to unwind. The overall feel is exclusive, leaning towards the luxurious, but it's not a cheap place to stay.

Scene

A 1920s villa with lush gardens converted into chic yet homey upscale hotel

Built as a private villa in the 1920s, this chic, upscale hotel is surrounded by lush private gardens with tightly clipped hedges, manicured lawns, and bursts of colorful flowers. The interiors in the reception area are homey but sophisticated, and done up in tastefully light tones with antique style pieces, eclectic furnishings, and an abundance of curios and objets d'art. The ambience certainly aims at refined while also feeling relaxed, and attracts the wealthier end of the tourist scale, including the occasional family with kids.

Location

Set in an exclusive Forte dei Marmi neighborhood, two blocks from the beach

The hotel is located in one of Forte dei Marmi's most exclusive and upscale neighborhoods, Roma Imperiale, from which it gets its name. Forte dei Marmi is located in the Versilia region of Tuscany, overlooking the Ligurian Sea in Northwest Italy. A long stretch of sandy beaches can be found just a couple blocks from the hotel, while the town center is a 10-minute stroll away. Forte dei Marmi is well positioned for day trips to Pisa, which takes just over half an hour to reach by car.

Rooms

Traditionally decorated with original art and marble flooring

The 31 rooms are individually decorated, although all follow a sea theme and are finished in a light, traditional style incorporating lots of beige and white. Each features an original painting by renowned artist Lorenzo Lazzeri. Amenities standard to all rooms include flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, fully stocked minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms also have balconies. Travertine marble flooring extends to bathrooms with walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, bidets, and luxury toiletries. Some standard rooms are on the small side.

Features

Fragrant gardens with massage beds and a swimming pool

The hotel's lush, fragrant gardens are dotted with seating areas and daybeds, all of which center around the swimming pool, which has ample lounge chairs and a whirlpool area. A buffet breakfast can be taken on the patio overlooking the grounds, and although there is no restaurant on-site, there is a menu of snacks and drinks available throughout the day. Outdoor massages can also be arranged and bike rental is available from the hotel.
