Bottom Line

The four-and-a-half-pearl Kayumanis Jimbaran Private Estate & Spa is an elegant, family-friendly spa resort in Jimbaran, a short three-minute walk to the beach. The 19 villas, which come in one- and two-bedroom configurations, include kitchenettes and their own swimming pool. Unlike many of the more couples-centric luxury villa properties on the island, Kayumanis Jimbaran offers plenty of kid-friendly amenities, including children's spa treatments, kid-size robes and slippers in the rooms, and PlayStations on request. Be aware that most of the room facilities are outdoors -- including the bathrooms -- and the property is full of dense jungle and all the creatures that come with that. Travelers who are squeamish about insects or who want to be right on the beach, might want to check out the Belmond Jimbaran Puri, but note that some of its room showers are also outdoors.

Scene

Elegant family-friendly villa resort with plenty of green space

Kayumanis Jimbaran Private Estate & Spa is a contemporary, family-focused spa resort surrounded by greenery. Guests enter through a secured gate into an open parking area with lots of palm trees and a modern fountain with water gurgling out of giant pots. Walkways lead through pond-like fountains to the front desk pavilion with marble floors, though seating is limited to a couple of chairs at the check-in desk and a wooden bench, so it's not an area where guests hang out. A large grassy lawn holds a gazebo playroom complete with toddler toys, a swing set, a slide, and a soccer goal. Guests are primarily vacationing families and couples.

Location

In the village of Jimbaran, a short walk to the beach and a quick drive to the airport

The hotel is located in the village of Jimbaran in southern Bali, which was a fishing village that turned into a tourist destination. The locale has white-sand beaches and good water for swimming, but it lacks a party scene. The property is situated off a quiet road and is a three-minute walk to the beach. The hotel is a 15-minute drive south of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, and it takes about the same amount of time to get to the center of Kuta. Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park is a 13-minute drive south of the hotel, while reaching the Uluwatu Temple takes closer to half an hour. Bali's capital of arts and culture, Ubud, is about 90 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Elegant, traditional villas with private pools, outdoor bathrooms and butler service -- but lots of bugs

The Kayumanis Jimbaran Private Estate & Spa has 19 villas in one- and two-bedroom configurations. Decor is simple and not particularly luxurious, though high traditional ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, dining terraces with seating areas, and furnishings made of local wood give the spaces a pleasant, if casual, ambience. All come with Bose entertainment systems, flat-screen TVs with satellite cable, kitchenettes with microwaves, minibars, air-conditioning, and private outdoor swimming pools. Master bedrooms have either king canopy beds or two twins. Guests with children can expect kid-size bathrobes and slippers and special bath products for kids; cots, highchairs, PlayStations, and age-appropriate books and DVDs are available on request.

Outdoor bathrooms feature separate showers, large soaking tubs, double vanities with big mirrors, and partially walled-off toilets. Still, the bathrooms aren't as private as one might hope for, considering how popular the property is with families, and the unsurprising presence of insects and geckos makes this set up less than ideal for many guests. A butler is available 24 hours a day to assist with any request.

Features

Indonesian restaurant with free breakfast, variety of classes and activities, and excellent spa

A free breakfast is served daily at the on-site Tapis Restaurant, which also offers fresh seafood dishes and Indonesian specialties. There's also an afternoon tea service every day, free of charge, available either in the restaurant or in villas. Private dining can be arranged on request, and beach picnics at the hotel's sister property in Nusa Dua -- a 20-minute drive away -- are also an option. The sister property also has its own beach club that can be reached via a shuttle that runs between the two resorts, but children must be at least 16 years old. Other activities include fishing and cycling trips, cooking lessons, and yoga classes. The on-site spa is a huge draw for many of the guests, offering beauty and health services, and massages -- including Balinese specialties -- along with treatments for children. Both Wi-Fi and on-site parking are free.
