Scene

Upscale hotel with local flavor and outdoor areas

As a member of Hliton’s Curio Collection, The Highland maintains quality services and amenities with the local flare that defines the brand. The lobby is a beautiful spot with gleaming wood floors, comfy leather chairs, and couches in brown and white, and plenty of natural light from tall windows. A fountain and potted plants bring in relaxing elements of nature. It is a very warm and inviting space with plenty of seating areas and free coffee and tea. Throughout the hotel, touches like cowhide chairs, lassos, and photos of cowboys and the stockyards reflect the Dallas locale. An on-site connection with local culture is also evident in live music events and regular film showings in conjunction with the Dallas Film Society. Outdoor restaurant seating and a pool provide chic spots to take in the Texas sun.The hotel draws business travelers who appreciate easy access to downtownDallas, and the comfortable and elegant rooms. Families and couples also come for the convenient location and amenities.

Location

Close to the affluent Park Cities area and across from Southern Methodist University

The Highland is just off the intersection of Route 75 and Mockingbird Lane in the Lower Greenville area of Dallas, Texas. Next door -- a four-minute walk away -- there’s a strip mall with a few stores and fast-food joints, plus a small dinner theater with fun shows. The hotel is just across the highway from Southern Methodist University, a seven-minute walk from the football stadium on the edge of the campus. The hotel is close to Park Cities, which is an affluent area comprising Highland Park and University Park. The George W. Bust Presidential Library and Museum is a 15-minute walk or four-minute drive. It is a five-minute walk to the Mockingbird train station and bus stop, for convenient access to the Dallas/Fort Worth area, though most visitors drive or take taxis/car services to get around town. There are many sights within a 10-minute drive, including the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas World Aquarium, and Reunion Tower’s panoramic city view from the observation deck and rotating restaurant. It is also a 10-minute drive to the JFK memorial plaza and nearby Sixth Floor museum for a haunting exhibit on the history of Kennedy’s presidency and assassination. Dallas Love Field Airport is a 15-minute drive from the hotel, and it's a 25-minute drive to the major hub of Dallas-Fort Worth Airport.

Rooms

Sophisticated, comfortable rooms with modern amenities like iPod docks

Rooms at the Highland are stylish and elegant, outfitted with modern amenities. Some are on the small side, but all have a large work desk and either double or king-size beds with quality linens. Decor is warm, featuring brown and ivory tones and Texas themed artwork -- including on the shade over the window and in the bathroom. All rooms have a 55-inch flat-screen TV with a DVD player, minibar, and a docking station for devices. A coffeemaker doesn't come standard, but it can be requested along with a microwave. Some rooms are specially cleaned and include hypoallergenic bedding and an air-purification system for extra comfort. Suites with a separate living space are also available. Sleek bathrooms have large vessel sinks, extra counter space, and a shower/tub combo with a curtain. Some upgraded rooms have a deep whirlpool tub instead. Also provided are a hairdryer and free toiletries consisting of Diptyque soap, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and lotion. On the downside, some guests have reported noise from the nearby freeway, so it's worth requesting a room away from the road.

Features

Good on-site restaurant, beautiful pool and hot tub, a spa, and fitness room

A solid list of quality amenities adds to the resort experience. The on-site steakhouse is excellent, emitting an upscale ambience with a playful Texas ranch flair -- think lasso chandeliers and cowhide chairs complete with horns. It is open for three daily meals most of the week, has brunch on Sunday, and prepares room service 24/7. The full-service bar has signature drinks and a build-your-own cocktail menu. A beautiful pool sits on a terrace, shaded by surrounded buildings. There are a large hot tub, cabanas where guest can order food from the restaurant or enjoy a massage, and free lounge chairs by the water. The Exhale Spa is a nice, relaxing spot offering massages, a variety of treatments for body and beauty, and exercise classes -- for an extra fee. There’s also a free 24-hour fitness center with a good range of equipment. The only parking is by valet -- for a fee -- which adds up over a longer stay. The hotel is pet-friendly, with pet beds and treats available. Wi-Fi is available everywhere for a fee, or it's free for Hilton Honors members.
