Kenny’s Tipperary Inn

Kenny’s Tipperary Inn is housed in a two-story motel-style building on well-tended grounds with lawns, trees, manicured hedges, and flowers. There are several outdoor seating areas, including two fire pits, where guests can congregate and relax. A gazebo features Asian art and furniture, and the lush Zen garden with plants, flowers, and Buddha statues has a tranquil feel. The owner also displays unusual items on the property, like a barber chair, ship’s wheel, and antique ice cream cart. The hotel attracts a mix of leisure travelers, including families, couples, and groups of friends, looking for a well-priced stay with a quiet atmosphere and local charm that's removed from the beach party scene.  

Kenny’s Tipperary is at the north end of Montauk in an area with restaurants, bars, shops, a supermarket, and fresh fish market. The hotel is less than a five-minute walk from Lake Montauk and the ferry to Block Island, and small beach next to the Gosman’s Dock restaurant. 

Ditch Plains Beach is a five-minute drive away, and the center of Montauk's town, with restaurants, shops, and dining, is also within five minutes by car. In terms of area sights, it's a seven-minute drive to Second House, Montauk's oldest structure built in 1746, now a museum. Montauk Point Lighthouse, at the eastern end of Montauk Point State Park and easternmost point of Long Island, is a 10-minute drive. Camp Hero State Park has a beach and hiking and biking trails, and is also about 10 minutes by car. 

The Long Island Rail Road's Montauk Station is a five-minute drive. The private Montauk Airport is 10 minutes by car; Long Island MacArthur Airport is roughly a two-hour drive; John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport are both roughly a three-hour drive, depending on traffic. 

The guest rooms and one- and two-bedroom apartments at Kenny’s Tipperary Inn have a budget look, but they’re a bit more charming and well-appointed than typical properties in the hotel's category. There's wood furniture of decent quality, mirrors and tasteful framed art on walls, and colorful throw pillows. Neutrals dominate the color palette -- beige, tan, and brown is used here -- with slate-blue or green carpeting in most rooms. The two-bedroom apartment has a wood floor with a Persian-style area rug. Some guest rooms are a little dark, with light coming in through panels on and around doors rather than full windows. 

Units are spacious and all have private or shared balconies or patios. Standard amenities include AC, (some also have ceiling fans), flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi, but kettles or coffeemakers don't come standard. Apartments have living areas with sofa beds, plus dining areas and kitchens with granite countertops, refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens with stoves, cookware, and tableware. One apartment has direct access to the Zen garden and pool area. Bathrooms are simple, but well-maintained, and all have showers or shower/tub combos, plus hairdryers and toiletries. Some feature pedestal sinks with limited counter space. 

Views are nothing special -- all units look out to the parking lot and nearby buildings. 

Amenities are limited at this hotel, but there are some nice features that add value. Topping the list is a 15-meter seasonal outdoor pool that's unheated but shallow, so water stays tepid. The pool is bordered by a deck with sun loungers, a picnic area, and two barbecue grills for guest use. The hotel also has a Zen garden and two outdoor fire pits with seating around them. 

There's no on-site restaurant, but places for breakfast are within a short walk of the hotel (guests should ask at reception for recommendations of what's open, depending on the season). An Irish pub is next to the hotel (a private establishment) and serves lunch and dinner, with the menu featuring burgers, steaks, seafood, pasta, and traditional Irish dishes. It also has a bar with karaoke and live music. 

Other amenities include a 24-hour front desk and free parking in spaces located right outside the guest rooms. The hotel offers free parking passes for Ditch Plains Beach and other area beaches. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout. Up to two pets are allowed with no weight limit, for a surcharge.
