Scene
Historic bed-and-breakfast with an eclectic design and cozy vibe; attracts mostly couples
Situated in a historic 18th-century cream Pombalino-style building with maroon windows and balconies -- refurbished in 2014 to preserve its historic features -- Casa do Barao offers a welcoming vibe and stylish interiors. The living room is a mix of colors, featuring bright artwork, a burgundy patterned rug, and mismatched furniture that come together to create a stylish, eclectic look. The adjacent library has a similar style; it's a cozy room filled with weathered couches, shelves of books, and funky busts, cute statues, and antique-style portraits. The breakfast room is small -- a veranda off the living room that’s illuminated by floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that lead out to a charming garden with fruit trees, potted plants, a small pool, and tables and chairs for seating. This property is best suited for couples and friends, as children under 16 are not allowed, and there is a limit to two guests per room.
Location
Convenient Chiado location within walking distance of several main attractions, restaurants, and shopping
Casa do Barao sits on a cobbled street lined with colorful historic buildings, right in the middle of Chiado, one of Lisbon’s “it’” neighborhoods. It’s an elegant district with old-style cafes, restaurants, shops, theaters, and bookstores filling the surrounding streets, and it’s easy to reach most of the top city attractions from here. The Santa Justa Elevator is a seven-minute walk away; Rossio Square is nine minutes away; and Praça do Comércio can be reached in 12 minutes. Sao Jorge Castle is a 26-minute walk away, or about 22 minutes via public transportation. The nearest bus stop is two minutes away, while the closest metro stop and train station, Cais do Sodré, is a seven-minute walk. Lisbon's Portela Airport is about a 20-minute drive away, or 33 minutes via public transit.
Rooms
Stylish, airy rooms with flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning; some have balconies
The guest rooms here are airy, contemporary, and beautifully decorated with a nearly all-white color scheme accented by pops of vibrant hues here and there courtesy of curtains and chairs. This stylish, contemporary aesthetic is paired with gorgeous hardwood floors and antique pieces that lend the spaces a touch of history. Some rooms add an artistic flair with framed black-and-white photographs or drawings adorning the walls. Standard amenities include mounted flat-screen TVs, safes, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi, though the rooms lack minibars, and only Premium With Terrace Rooms have coffee machines. Some have terraces with either views of the garden or the street. Bathrooms vary in style -- some have green marble and others a cream color scheme -- however, all are fairly small. But they're outfitted with showers with rainfall showerheads, toiletries, and hairdryers.
