Bottom Line

The upscale Le Saint-Sulpice Montreal is one of the more modern options in the heart of Old Montreal. All 108 units are suite-style and have kitchenettes and Nespresso machines; some also have fireplaces or balconies. There aren't many additional features at this fashionably cozy hotel other than the beautiful restaurant with garden terrace, but guests get free access to an off-site gym and discounts at a nearby Scandinavian spa. Travelers looking for more amenities may want to check out the InterContinental Montreal at the edge of Old Montreal, which is a bit less expensive and has a saltwater pool and a sauna on-site.

Scene

Artsy boutique hotel with modern flair in the heart of Old Montreal

Le Saint-Sulpice Montreal offers a more modern aesthetic than most of the other properties in Old Montreal. A black awning bearing the hotel's name at the entrance, along with several hanging pots filled with lush, green vines, dress up the elegant stone building. Inside, the luxurious lobby has thick marble columns, eye-catching classical and avant garde statues and chandeliers, and pops of bright red against a blend of mostly beige and dark-wood vintage and contemporary furniture. A cozy library area is furnished with a leather couch and armchairs beside a gas fireplace flanked by bookshelves and flock-patterned curtains that create a luxe-bohemian vibe. The on-site restaurant -- Sinclair -- is breezy and airy, with vaulted ceilings and all-white decor accented with dark-wood floors, swirled abstract paintings, and tan leather chairs; the space extends to an outdoor terrace in the hotel garden. Guests are a mix of couples, families, and business travelers who want a modern boutique-style experience in a historic neighborhood.

Location

Located in Old Montreal, directly behind the Notre-Dame Basilica

The hotel is ideally located for travelers hoping to soak up Old Montreal's French colonial atmosphere: chic lofts, design shops, and charming restaurants line the surrounding streets in almost every direction. The soaring Notre-Dame Basilica is directly behind the hotel and the scenic Old Port is a five-minute walk away. Montreal Convention Center is also five minutes away on foot, and the Place des Arts performance venue and the Museum of Contemporary Art are both about 15 minutes away on foot. The nearest metro station is at Place-d'Armes, and trips to the vibrant Plateau and Mile End take 10 to 15 minutes, while the sprawling Jean-Talon Market is 20 minutes away by metro. The airport is a 20-minute drive or about 40 minutes by public transportation using a combination of metro and airport bus.

Rooms

Fashionable suites with kitchenettes and beautiful stone accents

Each of the hotel's large suites -- starting at 500 square feet (or 46 square meters) -- are stylishly decorated in tan and gray tones with pops of bright red and dark, but vibrantly patterned carpets. Living areas have stone accent walls with vintage cream leather chairs and plush velveteen love seats under contemporary abstract art. Good beds are set in dark-wood frames or against dark oak headboards and are made up with white duvets, red bed runners, and matching throw pillows. Each suite is equipped with a kitchenette that includes a Nespresso coffeemaker, a kettle, a small sink, a two-burner stovetop, a mini-fridge, a microwave, and dishes/cookware. Other standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, safes, air-conditioning, and irons. Bathrooms are spacious and elegant, with large mirrors, wood-and-glass vanities, and shower/tub combos or separate bathtubs and walk-in showers. L'Occitane bath products, hairdryers, and robes come standard in all rooms. Some suites have fireplaces or balconies, while Deluxe Suites have dining areas and Signature Suites have spacious rooftop terraces and one or two bedrooms that can be ideal for families.

Features

Restaurant and lounge, off-site fitness and spa facilities, and event space

Sinclair Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has a garden terrace for summer al fresco dining. There's also a lobby bar -- Sinclair Lounge -- which serves coffee, snacks, and cocktails. The restaurant offers twists on new North American cuisine with Italian accents and is especially popular with locals for business lunches. The hotel can host events for up to 80 people and has four event rooms. Guest receive a discount at Scandinave Spa Vieux Montreal, which is one minute away on foot and offers Scandinavian water treatments and massages, and in-room spa treatments can also be arranged. Guests also have free access to Roberto Starnino Gym, which is fully equipped and better than most hotel fitness centers, a five-minute walk from the hotel. A guest computer and printer are available in the lobby, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Two pets per room are permitted for a fee and the hotel has valet parking, also for a fee.
