This attractive mid-range boutique hotel with just 38 rooms is less than 50 meters from the Boulevard Saint Germain and within walking distance of Notre Dame Cathedral. As is often the case with Parisian boutique hotels, the rooms are on the small side -- but they are tastefully decorated. Style varies from room to room, and some are more contemporary while others have a more traditional Parisian look. The nearby Hotel Dauphine Saint Germain is also charming, so it's worth comparing rates.
Scene
Atrium lobby with a vertical garden
The building's exterior is nondescript, but the automatic doors open onto a glass-roofed lobby that feels like a greenhouse. It is decorated in beechwood, beiges and creams, and the huge vertical garden is the focal point; an entire wall is hidden by greenery and beautiful flowers. The lobby area has comfortable sofas and is an good place to meet for a whiskey from the hotel's impressive selection of single malts and bourbons. The 18th-century building was formerly the residence of the vicomte de Chateaubriand, a famous writer and politician, and opened as a hotel in 1815. Numerous historic figures have passed through, including Simone de Beauvoir and John-Paul Sarte.
Location
In Saint Germain, within walking distance of Notre Dame Cathedral
The hotel is situated on a calm though charmless street 30 meters away from the luxury shops on the Boulevard Saint Germain. It's an ideal starting point for visiting the area by foot and the neighboring quarter of Saint Michel is only a 10-minute walk away; Notre Dame and the Ile de la Cité are a 15- to 20-minute walk. Metro lines 12 and 14 are close by, making it easy to get to most of the major sights and attractions of the French capital in under 20 minutes.
Rooms
Modern or traditional, depending on the room
Every room at the hotel has different decor, but all are clean and attractive. Many of the Classic and Superior Rooms are contemporary, with fresh bedding, sophisticated fabrics, and light wood accents (though carpeted floors look a tad dated). The bathrooms in these categories are quite small, but they're modern and have toiletries provided. The suites are on the top floor of the building and are decorated in a more traditional Parisian style with warm colors and patterned wallpaper.
Features
Vertical garden and an impressive whiskey selection
This hotel has a welcoming lobby with a lush vertical garden, as well as a secluded lounge off to the side of reception with bookshelves. The charming hotel bar has wide planked wood floors, oil paintings in gold frames, green patterned wallpaper and green upholstered bergère chairs -- not to mention an interesting whiskey selection (some options hail from Scotland and Japan) and some good bourbons.
