The 62-room Canyon Suites at The Phoenician is a Scottsdale landmark among luxury hotels. This intimate boutique is located on the greater grounds of The Phoenician Resort and is one of the highest ranked properties in the region. This smaller site offers personalized service, a private pool with poolside food service, and beautifully landscaped surroundings. The views -- looking out to Camelback Mountain and the golf course -- are gorgeous. The pool and golf course are the two hot spots here, but other areas of Canyon Suites are elegant inside and out. There is a full service spa and fitness center with classes and a sauna, free chauffeured Mercedes around the resort and to Fashion Square, and wine happy hours hosted by sommeliers. This hotel definitely exudes prestige appropriate for its price point, although rooms aren't quite as luxe as one might expect at a hotel of this caliber. While The Suites is kid-friendly, the main resort may be the better option for families since the main clientele here are those celebrating honeymoons and anniversaries and traveling on business.
Scene
Small, intimate, and elegant hotel within the larger complex of the Phoenician Resort
The Canyon Suites at the Phoenician is an intimate resort within the larger Phoenician Resort. The drive into this property takes guests across expertly manicured grounds with lawns, flowers, and fountains, past a golf course, and to the elegant entrance with its view of Camelback Mountain. The Canyon Suites has its own lobby, pool, and rooms overseen by its own staff. This exclusive hotel is higher in price than the already-steep parent resort, but it comes with plenty of extras and is particularly popular among couples. Interiors throughout the hotel are elegant, modern, and spacious. Inside, the lobby gleams with a crystal chandelier, a large fountain flowing over white marble, polished tile floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the expansive property. Both the Mother of Pearl and Canyon pools are quiet, though the Mother of Pearl is the more popular hangout spot (there is an18+ age requirement here). It is surrounded with sun loungers and cabanas. The overall atmosphere is upscale and polished.
Location
At the edge of the Phoenician property and the base of Camelback Mountain, close to Scottsdale and the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
At the base of Camelback Mountain and on the grounds of The Phoenician Resort, this boutique is safe and easy to walk around. The walks to other buildings and amenities around the property can take at least five minutes, but are also accessible via the private car shuttle. For shopping and dining in Scottsdale, a 10-minute drive are necessary. The drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to the hotel is less than 20 minutes.
Rooms
Refined rooms and suites with high-end amenities and private patios, but not particularly wow-worthy decor
The 62 rooms, including suites, are full of amenities and nice touches. Suite categories include: one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and Presidential. Decor is contemporary (if a bit plain), and comfortable touches include beige leather headboards, pillow-top beds, Italian linens, and soft throw blankets. The floor-to-ceiling windows grant access to the private patios with sun loungers, seats, and tables. They also offer views of the mountains, golf course, or pool, depending on the location of the room. Extras include Keurig coffeemakers, free Wi-Fi, iPhone docks, flat-screen TVs, and ample workspaces. Bathrooms have separate oval soaking tubs and stall showers, small flat-screen TVs, his-and-hers wash basins, and plenty of towels.
Features
Ambassadors, golf course, spa, wine happy hour, private car shuttle, several pools -- the list goes on, but many are shared with the parent resort
Instead of having dedicated front desk receptionists and concierge teams, this boutique hotel off-shoot employs ambassadors who provide personalized service by arranging activities and dining and room preferences (including scheduling and reserving free shuttled car service around the property and to downtown Scottsdale). Every evening, the hotel hosts the Hour of Joy, which is a wine happy hour during which a master sommelier highlights wines from different regions. Drinks can also be enjoyed poolside at the hotel’s only on-site restaurant, Canyon Grill. The pool area is impressive with its surrounding cabanas, landscaped waterfalls, and mother-of-pearl tiling. This pool area, compared to the others on the main property, is much more private thanks to the 18+ age requirement. For activities on the main grounds, there is a fitness center that offers classes and a full service spa menu, a USGA 27-hole golf course and pro shop, and 11 tennis courts. Wi-Fi is free.
