Bottom Line

Fully renovated and renamed in 2013, The Graham Georgetown (formerly the Monticello) is a stylish and contemporary three-and-a-half-pearl property with 57 rooms. Of those, more than half are suites with sofabeds and large bathrooms. The historic Georgetown location is a major plus, and is where the hotel's namesake, Alexander Graham Bell, once resided. There's a bit of buzz here, as the seasonal rooftop lounge and speakeasy-style restaurant are wildly popular draws for guests and locals. In addition, guests who are part of the Hilton Honors loyalty program can earn points for their stays here. For travelers on a budget, it's also worth considering Georgetown Suites, which also has a similarly enviable address in Georgetown at substantially lower rates. However, it lacks the same wow factor.

Oyster Hotel Review

The Graham Washington DC Georgetown, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Scene

Hip boutique property that embraces its historic surroundings with contemporary style

With its red brick, Federal-style facade, The Graham Georgetown fits in well among its historic Georgetown neighbors. However, its stylish and contemporary interiors are designed to cater to a mix of leisure and business travelers who appreciate its independent ethos and sense of place. Expect a vibe that's equal parts homey and tech start-up or coworking space. The lobby "living room" includes a large fireplace, beautiful marble and wood flooring, and elegant chandelier, and an eclectic mix of seating options. It all comes together to create something that's just the right amount of social, a quality that's enhanced in the hotel's buzzing drinking and dining scene. At the seasonal rooftop lounge and speakeasy-style bar and restaurant, there's always a bustling mix of guests and in-the-know locals. The vibe is fashionable, without being pretentious, at both venues -- an atmosphere that sums up the hotel quite well on the whole.

Location

In the heart of historic Georgetown, near shopping and dining, but far from the metro

The Graham Georgetown's location in the heart of one of Washington, D.C's most historic neighborhoods is a major pro for travelers seeking a local vibe. From the hotel, it's a quick walk to fashionable M Street, the C&O Canal National Historical Park, and the banks of Potomac River. Popular attractions within a 15-minute walk include The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Old Stone House, and Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection. Unfortunately, Georgetown isn't serviced by the Metrorail, which might make The Graham Georgetown less appealing for visitors wanting to explore D.C.'s many downtown attractions. The closest station is a 15- to 20-minute walk from the hotel, at Foggy Bottom/GWU. On the other hand, Metrobus and the Circulator (a bus system specifically designed to service D.C. major downtown tourist attractions) have pick-up and drop-off stops right near the hotel. DCA is an approximate 15-minute ride away, with BWI and IAD taking up to a 90-minute drive (depending on traffic).

Rooms

Bright and fresh, with plenty of space and premium amenities, plus suites with separate living rooms

The 57 rooms are a mix of standard rooms with either a single king- or queen-size bed or two queen-size beds, and suites. The latter feature king-size beds and separate living spaces that include king-size sofabeds. Note that suites make up more than half of the total rooms. All rooms are bright and fresh, with custom carpeting and patterned wallpaper, modern furniture, and colorful accents. They're a nice step up from most D.C. hotels when it comes to style, and the pillow-top beds are made with Liddell Ireland linens -- a nice upmarket touch. One of the more unique rooms is the Frank Sinatra Suite (Ol' Blue Eyes was rumored to have frequently stayed at the property during one of its earlier incarnations). It's a junior suite with a spacious outdoor patio off of the bedroom area that's commonly booked by guests hosting parties.

Standard amenities include robes and slippers, coffeemakers, laptop-size safes, irons and ironing boards, umbrellas, minibars, Bluetooth alarm clock radios, air-conditioning, and large smart TVs. Free Wi-Fi with digital access to The New York Times and Financial Times is available in all rooms as well. The bathrooms are spacious, with lots of white marble and decorative stone-tile mosaics surrounding either walk-in showers or large soaking tubs. Bathrooms also include dark wood double-sink vanities and premium L'Occitane products.

Features

Outstanding seasonal rooftop lounge and speakeasy-style restaurant; small fitness center and limited service business center

Despite its boutique status, The Graham does manage to make itself something of a destination on the Georgetown scene. The 3,000-square-foot rooftop lounge is actually one of the most coveted locations in the nation's capital. Comfy furniture makes for great lounging and is accompanied by inventive small bites and drinks. These all pair quite nicely with the spectacular views of some D.C.'s most iconic landmarks, such as the Kennedy Center, the Washington Monument, and Georgetown University. The Alex, a basement level speakeasy-style bar and restaurant, is another outstanding feature. It's open for breakfast and dinner, and the bar serves craft cocktails. Keep in mind that room service hours are unfortunately limited. Other hotel offerings include a small fitness center and limited-service business center that are both free and available 24 hours. Wi-Fi is also free for guests and accessible throughout the hotel. As for parking, only paid valet service is offered. In addition, guests are allowed to have a small dog when a cleaning fee is paid.
