Victorian elegance here honors former Chief Justice resident, Sir Frederick Darley. Nestled amid two acres of manicured gardens and wild woodlands, the property is deceptively large. Expansive lounges extend onto shrubbery-lined paths and sequestered garden nooks, and a classic feel pervades throughout -- think black-and-white checkered floors, damask wallpapers in gold leaf, and floral-accented sitting areas with cream and pink color schemes. Carved fireplace settings make for popular afternoon teas, and Gentleman's Club vibes are atmospheric in the billiards room, however, some interiors are showing their age. The hotel still has sophisticated offerings -- from its gourmet Darley restaurant, to sleek pools, and a spa. The clientele is largely couples and families who come here for the quiet getaway feel.

The hotel's quiet street enhances tranquility, as does stunning nature nearby, and travelers choose the Blue Mountains region for its breathtaking views. Vistas are sensational from Echo Point, a nine-minute downhill walk from the hotel, and lookout spot Three Sisters is three minutes closer. Katoomba Falls are 11 minutes on foot, and bush trails beginning from the hotel extend for miles. Downtown Katoomba isn't too far at five minutes by car, or a 30-minute walk, and Leura shopping mall is a seven-minute drive. Thrill-seekers head to caged railways at Scenic World, a five-minute drive, or 20-minute walk. Allow that for Katoomba railway station. Sydney CBD is a 90-minute drive, as is Sydney Airport.

Overlooking gardens or scenic valleys (worth the upgrade for this), bright rooms have dainty decor consisting of canopied beds with wrought-iron frames, bird or floral artwork, and light pinks or blues in drapes, Wedgwood wallpapers, and throws. Guests will either find their frilly motifs charmingly romantic or kitschy. Seating areas and desks come standard, as do satellite flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, minibars, kettles for tea- and coffee-making, individual climate control, and free basic-speed Wi-Fi. More spacious Suites add coffeemakers and living rooms. 

Marble bathrooms are high-end, offering bathtubs (some of which are jetted) and separate stall showers, plus organic Appelles Apothecary toiletries, hairdryers, and heated towel racks. Wardrobes house slippers, robes, ironing facilities, and safes. On the downside, there are fees for cribs and upgrading to higher-speed Wi-Fi. Rooms can be fitted with cribs. Two pet-friendly rooms require advance reservation.

Overlooking rose gardens planted by Sir Frederick Darley, the aptly named Darley Restaurant is a bright, elegant space with floor-to-ceiling windows, paneled wood or brocade-papered walls, and original stained-glass details. A crystal chandelier hangs over gold tufted chairs, and locally sourced, refined menus here fit the setting. The Orangery breakfast room has conservatory vibes with checkered floors and a wall of glass, but mornings aren't a favorite here, as it's often crowded. Additionally, the pricey buffet often has hot food that's gone cold and non-pod coffee costs extra. The bar's all-day menus include afternoon teas with scones and cakes on three-tiered stands, plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. 

Open only during summer, the infinity outdoor pool is serene, and white umbrellas shading blue loungers surround lawns here, with beautiful nearby gardens. The spa's indoor pool accompanies sauna, steam, and whirlpool facilities, and pampering treatments are available. The small 24-hour gym's cardio and weight-training machines are old, but the tennis court and free bikes offer activity-focused alternatives. The billiards and chess room has a gentlemen's club vibe with plaid carpeting, forest-green walls, and leather seating. Three meeting rooms hold up to 100 people, and lobby computers are free to use. Free on-site parking fills up fast, while valet garage parking is at a fee. Basic Wi-Fi is free throughout, or guests can upgrade to higher-speed.
