Pros
- Some rooms feature private outdoor patios
- Nice bar and lounge off the lobby with a pool table
- Pretty rooftop garden/courtyard (though it could use more cozy seating and less concrete)
- Large flat-screen TVs
- Free daily breakfast and Wi-Fi (though service is spotty)
- Walking distance to most Sydney attractions
- Affordable rates compared to chain hotels in the area
- Pet-friendly
Cons
- Rooms are basic
- Many of the furnishings show their age (rusted mini-fridges, chipped mirrors)
- Exposed showers in the bathrooms offer little privacy
- Bathroom tiles need regrouting
- No business center, fitness facilities, or full restaurant
Bottom Line
This Colonial mansion turned nightclub turned boutique hotel has a rock 'n roll history, having been frequented by celebrities like Madonna and the Rolling Stones back when it was known as Cauldron Nightclub. The building has a slightly industrial feel, with exposed concrete floors, though wood furnishings help give it a homier vibe. The lobby lounge features a pool table and comfortable sofas, as well as conveniences like a toaster and hotplate (the hotel does offer a free daily breakfast as well). The 13 rooms at the Altamont are basic, with some visible wear and tear and dingy bathrooms (the exposed showers make it hard not to flood the rest of the bathroom with water). They are reasonably clean, though, and have large flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. Business travelers may also want to look elsewhere, as there is no restaurant, business center, or fitness room here, and Wi-Fi, though free, is unreliable. It's a decent value option for visitors looking to be close to the Kings Cross nightlife scene.
