In downtown Charleston, overlooking a marina -- a mile and a half from the Historic District
SpringHill Suites is located about a mile and half from Charleston's Historic District, by the marina. While guests can enjoy great water views, they'll have to hop in the car to see anything else. There aren't many attractions within walking distance of the hotel besides two small shopping centers, a Waffle House, one other restaurant.
The hotel is located in an area called St. Andrews, which is part of West Ashley. This mostly residential area on the west bank of Ashley River is a peaceful community that meets modern consumerism -- wide streets lined with trees, cars parked on front lawns of cute houses, and huge shopping malls with hundreds of stores and chain restaurants.
West Ashley proper covers an immense area across the river from Charleston, and is where some of the most important historic sites outside the Historic District are located. You will need a car whenever you want to leave your hotel, but you won’t find much traffic anywhere.
SpringHill Suites Charleston Downtown is a basic mid-range Marriott hotel. The place is popular with families, since all of the rooms are suites with kitchenettes. There's a decent-size outdoor pool here, and a fun giant checkerboard, but that's about it. It's tucked away a bit, about a mile and a half from Charleston's bustling Historic District, so guests will need a car to get to anything. This hotel is a good option for anyone looking to avoid the higher rates of historic Charleston, but it's a chain in a city known for its authentic southern hospitality and stately charm.
