Bottom Line

This historic hotel in the center of Florence offers the best of both worlds: modern decor and comfort in a 12th-century building with beautiful details, such as frescoed ceilings and and stained glass. Most guests consider it a good value for a four-pearl property in a central location near most of the sights, though there aren’t a ton of features; the nearby Grand Hotel Minerva has comparable rates, a rooftop pool, and a restaurant. Fun fact: Some scenes of “Amici miei,” a cult Italian movie from the 1970s, were filmed in one of the NH Porta Rossa’s rooms.

NH Collection Firenze Porta Rossa

Scene

Stunning antique details and modern decor

A dazzling 19th-century stained glass ceiling, along with frescoes and colorful tiled floors show off the building’s history. These distinctive details, mixed with bright, modern furnishings, create an elegant atmosphere. The sunny breakfast room and adjoining bar is similarly stylish, with a sophisticated black and white color scheme and pops of red and gold.

Location

In a pedestrian area in the city center

The NH Porta Rossa sits in the middle of a pedestrian area in front of the medieval Palazzo Davanzati and a few blocks from the Piazza della Repubblica. It’s a five-minute walk to the Duomo. The Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi Gallery are also five minutes away by foot. The main Santa Maria Novella train station is a 10-minute walk away.

Rooms

Modern and minimalist

The 72 air-conditioned rooms have a chic, minimalist look with white furniture and modern light fixtures. All rooms have flat-screen TVs and minibars. Free Wi-Fi is a nice perk, though some guests have complained that the signal is spotty. Large bathrooms have bowl sinks and stall showers. Depending on where rooms are situated in the hotel, some have more street noise than others. Also, some of the standard room types are quite small.

The Monalda Tower suite is particularly lovely, though it can only be accessed via a private staircase after an elevator ride to the fifth floor, making it best for fit travelers. It has rustic, vaulted, wood-beamed ceilings, as well as a black and white marble bathroom with one bright orange wall. Another standout feature is the suite's sweeping views of the city, including the Duomo.
