Bottom Line

A huge, sprawling property attached to a water park, zoo, aquarium, golf course, and convention center, the busy Moody Gardens Hotel Spa & Convention Center is a resort-style hotel with a wide variety of amenities and activities. It doesn't quite live up to its four-star status, but it's a solid value considering the lovely rooms and features. The property has 418 rooms along with a spa, several on-site restaurants and bars, and an assortment of ballrooms and meeting spaces. Free Wi-Fi and self-parking are nice perks. The hotel includes both indoor and outdoor heated pools along with a large fitness center, and while the beach and historic district are both nearby, the property is so large that guests might find it easier to take the free hotel shuttle or drive rather than trying to walk anywhere.

Moody Gardens Hotel Spa & Convention Center

Scene

A large, open, and traditional lobby welcomes business and leisure guests

Although this property is attached to a convention center, a water park, and a number of other features open to the general public, the hotel itself has its own separate entrance for overnight guests. Decorated in neutral tones, the spacious lobby at the Moody Gardens Hotel features plants and fountains, giving color and warmth to an otherwise traditionally decorated space. Several seating areas are scattered around the room, and large windows flood the lobby with light. The marble reception desk offers resort and travel information, and signs point the way to the convention center, guest rooms, fitness center, swimming pools, and ballrooms. A lobby bar offers televisions, cocktails, and snacks, along with plenty of seating. Because of its many amenities for both leisure and business travelers, the property attracts a wide range of guests, from families to convention-goers.

Location

Self-contained resort, a short drive from the airport and downtown Galveston

Located on the end of Galveston, Moody Gardens is close to the beach, Strand historic district, and airstrip, and is mainly surrounded by residences. However, as the property is enormous and includes dining options, pools, sports, and a convention center, most guests can find everything they need on-site. The area doesn't have much within convenient walking distance, although the resort does offer a free shuttle service to nearby attractions. Travelers with their own cars will find plenty of dining and shopping options, as well as museums, theaters, and activities, within a 15-minute drive of the property. The Scholes International Airport is only two minutes away by car, while Houston is an hour's drive away.

Rooms

Bright, spacious rooms and lovely multi-room suites with wet bars

All of the rooms at this property are spacious, clean, and welcoming, offering a number of convenient amenities and various views of the property. Standard rooms are generously sized and decorated in pale shades of yellow, blue, and chocolate brown, with separate sitting areas. Junior suites are larger and include two pull-out sofa beds. Guests who want the most space (and luxury) should book a One- or Two-Bedroom Suite, all of which feature wet bars, separate seating and dining areas, and parlors. All rooms include free Wi-Fi and come with mini-fridges, coffeemakers, safes, and premium cable. Rooms on higher floors tend to be quieter, and have views of nightly fireworks displays that are staged above the resort's three pyramids (which house an aquarium, a science exhibit, and an artificial rainforest).
