The Light occupies one of Manchester's grand old buildings, and sits next to the traditional English pub, The Unicorn. Despite its historic exterior, the style throughout is relatively modern and bright. Expect to see a semi-industrial look, with details like exposed brick walls and pipework, plus lots of gray accents throughout. As an apartment-style hotel, it's popular with families and corporate guests who prefer more independence than found in traditional hotels. It's also a favorite for groups like bachelorette parties, who sometimes book a handful of rooms or suites. That said, it's generally not a party hotel, and has a chilled atmosphere, especially in the cozy Lounge Bar.

Light ApartHotel is in the Northern Quarter amid much of the city's buzzing and trendiest spots. Indie boutiques in Afflecks indoor market and high street shops in the Arndale Centre are both literally next door to the property. Within the city center, getting around on foot is pretty easy -- it's about a 10-minute walk to Manchester Arena, and to attractions like the Football Museum and Art Gallery. It's a longer 20-minute walk to nightlife at Deansgate and the Science Museum, but the free metrobus stop is just along the road. The bus station at Piccadilly Gardens is five minutes from the hotel on foot. Buses connect across the city and to attractions out of town like the Trafford Shopping Centre, and SeaLife Manchester, which takes about 50 minutes. Trains for the airport leave from Manchester Piccadilly Station -- a 10-minute walk away (or a few minutes by cab). The journey takes about 45 minutes door-to-door. Otherwise, the journey is about 25 minutes by cab.

Apartments at The Light are mostly modern, with a monochrome finish and lots of clean lines throughout. Decor is simple, and there's not much in the way of accessories or artwork, so some units can feel a bit sparse. Previous guests have occasionally noted a few tired and worn details throughout the apartments. A variety of configurations are available, from Studios with kitchenettes to multi-bedroom units that work for families and groups. There are also split-level Penthouses and a Premium Penthouse Suite, with a vast rooftop terrace and hot tub. 

Living areas in all units are bright, with dining tables, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, balconies, and full kitchens including ovens, stovetops, electric kettles, toasters, and refrigerators. Bedrooms feature TVs and small wardrobes or hanging spaces. Executive Suites include larger sitting areas and bedrooms that are a touch bigger as well. Penthouse Suites add little extras like Bluetooth speakers and 50-inch TVs, as well as having a more stylish look overall. There is no air-conditioning in any unit. Noise from the street can be an issue, and the occasional rowdy group also pass through here (particularly on weekends).

Lime green accents punch up the bathrooms here, which include large mirrors, plenty of counter space, toiletries, and hairdryers. Standard Rooms have shower/tub combos, while Executive Rooms and Suites feature rainfall shower cubicles plus upgraded L'Occitane products. The larger suites have two -- or even three -- bathrooms. 

While many aparthotels lack any common features whatsoever, The Light offers a few thoughtful extras that do help set it apart from the competition. For starters, the bar is a much-welcome perk that features an excellent cocktail menu. There's also a small gym with a few cardio and resistance machines, plus floor workout space and showers. The hotel provides a free grab-and-go breakfast during the week, which includes pastries, juice, fruit, yogurt, and hot drinks. There are meeting rooms available, and the Platinum Penthouse -- with its own large rooftop terrace -- is often used for events. The hotel has a small underground parking lot, for an extra fee, though spaces are limited and it operates on a first-come-first-served basis. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
