What It's Like

Running from 14th Street to 34th Street on Manhattan's westside, Chelsea is the center of both Manhattan's gay community and, with over 350 art galleries, its contemporary art scene. It's also home to an eclectic mix of home antique stores, design boutiques, and endless sample sales (including the famous Barney's Warehouse Sale), not to mention the Chelsea Market, a former Oreo cookie factory turned foodie paradise chockablock with bakeries, restaurants, and gourmet goodies.

Where to Stay

Great restaurants, bars, shops, and cultural activities -- including the contemporary galleries concentrated in the West Chelsea Arts District (18th to 28th streets between 10th and 11th Avenues) -- share space throughout the neighborhood, though most hotels hover closer to the subway stations on 7th and 8th Avenues. Largely, Chelsea's hotels are great values -- at least when compared to similar hotels father downtown, such as those in SoHo or TriBeCa. Top picks include the Holiday Inn Express, the infamous Hotel Chelsea, and the swankier Maritime, which is also near the clubs in the West Village's Meatpacking District. However, it's worth noting that while the gray, built-up blocks near 30th Street are convenient to many of the city's tourist attractions -- the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, and the Penn Station transportation hub are within walking distance -- they're far from pretty.
