Bottom Line

The three-pearl Hotel Le Chat Noir offers a touch of Montmartre's boisterous spirit and well-priced accommodations in a location rich with history near the Moulin Rouge. Throughout its modern spaces, the boutique property hints at its history as a famous cabaret by the same name. Its 41 chic rooms contain flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, and ample freebies, and select higher-end units have small balconies and Eiffel Tower views, but all lack minibars or mini-fridges, and some guests note street noise. The breakfast spread, lauded for its quality and variety, is served in an attractive space but costs extra, although Wi-Fi is free throughout. There's little else in the way of features here; if a full restaurant and bar are a priority, check out nearby Grand Pigalle Hotel.

Hotel le Chat Noir

Scene

A trendy modern boutique with details reminiscent of its cabaret days

Once the site of the famed Chat Noir -- a 19th-century cabaret that continued to kick up it's heels until the 1920s -- this hotel still features more than a few winks and nods to its popular past. Dark silhouettes of felines appear by room numbers, stairwells, and windows, cleverly painted to appear as if they're sitting on outdoor balcony railings. Those sleek cats and the rather sexy red-and-black decor all echo the cabaret's emblematic poster, which is preserved in the hotel's dining room: a mosaic of a slit-eyed feline set against a fiery orange-and-black lettering.

Despite its rich history, the atmosphere here is firmly modern. And there's little in the way of common spaces or reason to linger, apart from the breakfast room, which is why mornings are the hotel's buzziest time. Bench or ottoman seating here stays au courant, but framed sketches of finely dressed 19th-century ladies and gents on the walls provides another nod to the past. The small adjoining fireplace lounge gives a cozier spot for savoring a cappuccino. Clientele tends to be couples seeking a romantic vibe, though business travelers are also drawn by the reasonable rate and lighthearted atmosphere.

Location

On a busy boulevard in a touristy Montmartre, near cafes, public transit, and entertainment

Hotel Le Chat Noir stands on busy Boulevard de Clichy in Montmartre, on the southern edge of the 18th Arrondissement, bordering the 9th Arrondissement. It's a touristy neighborhood with tons of cafes and souvenir shops, plus red-light district relics -- though it's perfectly safe day or night. The hotel is across the street from the Blanche Metro station, and a two-minute walk to Moulin Rouge. Sacré-Cœur is also walking distance, though guests who'd rather not hoof it up the hill can catch the nearby metro.

Rooms

Clean-lined rooms with red-and-black details and kettles, but no minibars

The black cat motif found in the rest of the hotel carries over to rooms, which have categories called "Feline," "Super Feline," and "Ultra Feline." The color palette also carries over, with black lacquer furniture and touches of striking red throughout -- including bathrooms' mirror frames, which feature tiny black kittens in the corners. Silhouettes of Victorian figures on doors and bedside lamps provide another witty detail.

Rooms have white sateen damask sheets, flat-screen TVs, small work surfaces, electric kettles with coffee and tea, water, safes, and air-conditioning, but they're missing minibars or mini-fridges. Bathrooms are sleeker, done in rich, rust-colored tiles. They're outfitted with walk-in rainfall showers, mod pedestal sinks, and ample bath products.

Higher-end rooms have small balconies, and some look onto the Eiffel Tower. These bathrooms have heated towel racks and deep tubs with removable showerheads -- but no shower curtains or dividers, which can leave bathrooms damp. The top-floor apartment is a duplex and has a full kitchen and a wrap-around terrace with expansive skyline views. Guests that need quieter quarters may wish to request a room that doesn't face the street, as these can get outside noise.

Features

Breakfast in a charming pantry and free Wi-Fi throughout, but no full restaurant or bar

Aside from the stylish breakfast room, Hotel Le Chat Noir is light on features. The dining room's buffet, set up like a cafe, offers an appealing spread of items for a fee -- many of which are organic -- including eggs and bacon, plus pastries, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, and preserves. Breakfast can be delivered to guest rooms for a nominal additional charge. Apart from this morning meal, the hotel doesn't provide other food or drinks as there's no full restaurant or bar. There's also no public computer, although Wi-Fi is free and reception offers printing services. Another missing feature: no on-site parking. Concierge services are offered.
