Bottom Line

The 23-room, budget Matterhorn Inn is not fancy, but it is clean, comfortable, and ideally located in Sedona’s Uptown area, with its trendy shops, restaurants, and galleries. The motel-style inn’s views of Oak Creek Canyon are especially impressive. There is a small pool and outdoor hot tub, and an outdoor fireplace on the pool deck. Rooms are simple and unassuming, a bit dated in style, with spacious private balconies from which to watch the sunset over the red rocks. All in all, the Matterhorn is a low-key spot with a welcoming atmosphere and immaculate accommodations, which allows guests to spend the money they save on a room trying out the many local bars, restaurants, and adventures.

Matterhorn Inn

Scene

Low-key and casual, with basic motel decor and welcoming atmosphere

Even though the style is pretty basic, the Matterhorn Inn is a casual, welcoming, and popular spot in an excellent location. The inn doesn’t have a bar or restaurant where guests can gather, but there is a spacious pool deck with an outdoor fireplace for cool nights that can turn into a bit of a social scene for guests. The lobby is tiny and serviceable, with little to no space for hanging out, but there is local art on the walls, including photography and desert paintings, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The hotel is pet-friendly, and includes a fenced-in dog run, which adds greatly to the comfortable family feeling.

Location

In the heart of Sedona's trendy Uptown area, near hiking trails, with stunning views

The Matterhorn Inn is located on a hill in the center of Sedona’s Uptown area, with shops, restaurants, and art galleries, all within walking distance. The location is so convenient that guests can pull into the parking lot and leave their car in place while exploring the town on foot throughout their stay. The area is safe and easy to reach, right on Highway 89, Sedona’s main thoroughfare. During daytime, it is heavily trafficked, but things shut down early and are quiet come nighttime. There are hiking and biking trails nearby, and plenty of day trips in the area. Business travelers may prefer to stay on the outskirts of town, where things are less congested. The views of Oak Creek Canyon and the red rocks are exceptional.

Rooms

Spacious and clean, with pretty balconies for enjoying the sunset over the canyon

Rooms at the Matterhorn Inn are spacious and clean, if a bit dated and bland in style, with large picture windows and private balconies with canyon and red rock views. Balconies have potted desert flowers for added charm. Eastern-facing rooms on the second floor have the best views. The decor is simple and Southwestern in flavor, mostly in shades of brown, with wrought-iron beds -- a king or two extra-long doubles -- and small bathrooms with basic shower/tub combinations and tiled floors. Amenities include coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs with cable, mini-fridges, and, upon request, microwaves. The walls tend to be thin; request a room with upgraded soundproofing.

Features

Private dog run, solar-heated pool, hot tub, and outdoor fireplace

The Matterhorn Inn is a simple home base from which to explore Sedona and the surrounding desert, with hard-to-find bonuses like a fenced-in dog run for four-legged guests. The seasonal outdoor pool is solar-heated; there is an adjacent hot tub and shady cabana with sunbeds, (although it is just over the wall from the parking lot). There is an outdoor fireplace by the pool where guests can gather during cool evenings, and an observation deck with unparalleled sunset views of the red rocks. There is no business center, but there is a web-connected computer in the lobby for guest use. There's also free Wi-Fi.
