The 20-room, mid-range Oak Creek Terrace
Resort is a rustic, family-owned and -operated hotel in Oak Creek Canyon,
just north of Sedona. The landscape is the star here, with a
creek for swimming or fishing with the hotel’s fishing poles, a creekside
glade with hammocks for napping, and bird sounds for accompaniment.
Each room -- some are standalone cottages, others are in the main building -- has different features, such as screened patios, but all have
romantic wood-burning fireplaces and whirlpool tubs for two. The hotel is a great, unfussy choice for vacationing families
and couples.
Scene
A low-key woodland paradise, just far enough from civilization
The Oak Creek Terrace Resort has a woodland
lodge feel, with low, cabin-like buildings that blend beautifully into the
landscape. The Johnson family has owned and operated the resort for
28 years, and it has a rustic, quirky charm that won’t appeal to
guests who want fancy room service at their fingertips, but will be bliss for
travelers looking for a low-key escape. The sprawling, verdant grounds are made for relaxing
to the sounds of birds and burbling Oak Creek in the background. There are
hammocks strung creekside, and comfortable chairs for
watching the kids (or grown-up counterparts) fish with the resort’s fishing
poles. A double swing sits over the creek, and a picturesque gazebo is furnished
with couches. The resort’s koi pond is large and picturesque, not a
glorified fishbowl. There are plenty of grills, and a variety of outdoor seating for dining al fresco (even if it’s pizza delivery, arranged by
the front desk). Sculptures can be found around the property, even in the crooks
of trees, and guests' dogs enjoy the run of the place. The Oak Creek Terrace is a
woodland escape, not far from civilization.
Location
Rural and quiet, 10 minutes from Uptown Sedona
Located in Oak Creek Canyon, the Oak Creek Terrace Resort is set right on
Highway 89A, heavily trafficked during the day, but quiet at night. The resort
itself is peaceful and quiet, and the surrounding area is rural, with few nearby businesses, although a Dairy Queen and a marketplace for Native American handicrafts are both across the street. A car is necessary, as there is no other dining or shopping within
walking distance, and parking is free. Downtown Sedona is five minutes away by car, and the trendy
Uptown area is a 10-minute drive. Slide Rock State Park is nearby, along with
plenty of other hiking and biking areas.
Rooms
Rustically romantic and more modern than expected, with a multitude of features
Each room at the Oak Creek Terrace Resort is
differently sized and configured, with a variety of surprising features among the small
motel-style rooms, bungalows, and cabins. Each has a wood-burning fireplace and
a whirlpool tub for two; one is even heart-shaped for a kitschy romantic feel. The overall look is surprisingly modern for such a rustic resort, with hardwood floors and clean-lined contemporary furniture. Some rooms have kitchens; all
have microwaves, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs with free
HBO. Some guests have had heating issues; others find the rustic cabins charmingly
romantic. Bathrooms are small, and some shower stalls are tiny. Room 17, an
A-frame cabin, has a cozy bed and desk tucked up under the eaves, and a porch over
Oak Creek.
Features
Sprawling grounds with creekside hammocks, grills, sun terrace, and scenic Oak Creek, for swimming and fishing
The Oak Creek Terrace Resort has the scenic Oak Creek running right through its sprawling grounds, to which guests have full access for swimming, wading,
splashing, or fishing with poles borrowed from the hotel. Each room has a gas
grill, and there are a variety of outdoor seating areas where guests can
picnic. There is a terrace with sunbeds and couches, and swings and hammocks are scattered
throughout the property for lounging. The hotel has
vending machines for snacks and sodas, but there is no restaurant; the front
desk will provide take-out menus and dining recommendations. Free Wi-Fi is available.
