Outside the city center, the lower-middle-range Albergo Fiorenza is a simple older hotel near the beach promenade, though it faces a busy street and a gas station. Its dated appearance can be a bit charming, as is the case with the dining room, which feels like a midcentury time capsule, but mostly the property looks overdue for a renovation. There's a tiny bar and free breakfast, but little else in the way of features. The 30 air-conditioned rooms have some modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, along with side-by-side balconies. A bus stop down the street can take guests to downtown Salerno within 15 minutes. For a step up in quality, but surprisingly similar rates, check out the Novotel Salerno Est Arechi, which also has an outdoor pool.
Scene
Small hotel with aging midcentury decor
The Albergo Fiorenza's decor is a late midcentury throwback, especially in its minty green, and pale yellow color palette and in some cases, actual furnishings, with a few '80s additions thrown in. This isn't the glamorous "Mad Men" look of the '60s, but rather functional furniture like cushioned metal chairs and armless sofas covered in a '80s print. As far as common areas go, the bar is crammed into a hallway between the lobby and the breakfast room, with no stools to sit on and only two armchairs accompanied by as many ashtrays. The hotel is probably at peak capacity when tourists book affordable stays here for Salerno's annual Christmas light show, a spectacular display that takes over the city streets.
Location
On a gritty urban street, one block from the beach promenade
The hotel sits on a busy street facing a gas station and a McDonald's, outside of downtown Salerno between the Amalfi and Cilentana coasts. The neighborhood is a bit run-down and deserted, with little of note within walking distance apart from the beachfront and a few local bars and restaurants. Having a car is helpful, despite the limited self-parking (for a fee) as the taxis can get expensive. Downtown Salerno is about a 10-minute drive, or 15 minutes via the nearby bus stop to Salerno Station. The Salerno Amalfi Coast Airport is about a 21-minute drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Rooms with air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and shared balconies
The Albergo Fiorenza has 30 air conditioned rooms arranged as singles, doubles, or triples (with one double and one twin bed). Decor is dated -- in a variety of light pastel color palates with dark wood trim -- but some might enjoy the retro look that's so firmly from decades past. Items like bright blue corded phones, painted radiators, and colorful landscape paintings add some fun accents, but paisley curtains and upholstery are potential eyesores. All rooms have small side-by-side balconies with red plastic chairs, and guests should note that street-facing rooms get some traffic noise. Standard amenities include small desks and chairs, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms are covered in old-fashioned, salmon-colored tile with small heated towel racks, bidets, and narrow shower stalls.
Features
Free breakfast buffet, small bar, business corner, and meeting room
For a lower-middle-range hotel, the Albergo Fiorenza has a fair amount of features, but like the rest of the hotel, they're all tinged with a dated, midcentury vibe. A daily breakfast buffet is included in room rates, served in a teal-and-gold dining room with floral wallpaper accents. The lobby has a small lounge area with old purple couches and blue armchairs centered around a flat-screen TV, and two desks here provide workstations with a computer and a printer each. Around the corner, there's also a small meeting room with a conference table and audiovisual equipment. Tucked between the lobby and the breakfast room, the small cocktail bar has an espresso machine, but guests will have to find somewhere to sit in another room.
