The 40-room Hotel Baita dei Pini is a family-run hotel dating back to the 1950s, with charming classic interiors that some guests might feel are a little old-fashioned. It's just minutes' walk to Bormio's famous thermal spa or ski lifts to the glacier -- though the main road outside can get a little noisy. Rooms are cozy and alpine-inspired, some affording pretty mountain views from spacious balconies. A small spa area with sauna and hot tub is a bonus. Rates are reasonable for the area, though for something a little more contemporary try La Genzianella Bormio across the river.
Scene
Warm and welcoming family-run, small hotel
Hotel Baita dei Pini opened in 1957 and remains one of the oldest hotels in the area. The uninspiring architecture of the era is improved by and partly covered with an explosion of colorful, pretty flowers along its wood-slat balconies. Run by the Dei Cas family, the interiors really have a strong homey vibe, albeit with upmarket aspirations -- plush sofas sit around a blazing stone-clad fireplace illuminated by flamboyant chandeliers that twinkle above wood-framed, velvet armchairs. The general ambience is warm and welcoming, while mismatched and slightly dated furnishings and decor add to the feel of stepping back in time. Most will find it charming and cozy, though it may be too old-fashioned for some tastes.
Location
Set just of Bormio's historical center just minutes from spa and ski-lifts
The hotel is positioned just off the center of the small Alpine town of Bormio, located in the Lombardy region of the Alps in northern Italy. The town's famous thermal spas are under five minutes' walk away, while the Bormio 2000 and Ciuk ski lifts are a few minutes away by foot just across the river. The Baita is set at the foot of the Ortles-Cevedale Glaciers, where alpine and cross-country skiing are available throughout the year, while hiking and biking are popular during the summer. The Rhaetian Railway station of Tirano is about half an hour away by car, while the nearest international airport is Milan Malpensa, a good three hours' drive away.
