Bottom Line

Near the river and Margaret Island, to the north of central Budapest, this budget property is a convenient option for travelers looking for something more interesting than the average hostel bunk bed. A variety of colorful themes decorate the eight rooms, half of which are shared dorms, and the other half of which are private apartments with ensuite bathrooms suitable for families. The shared bathrooms are cramped and could benefit with some updates, but the overall quality and cleanliness here exceeds that of most hostels. Guests looking for more private rooms in a similar price range can find them at easyHotel Budapest Oktogon in the neighboring Terezvaros, though everything from Wi-Fi to TV costs extra there.

Aventura Boutique Hostel & Apartments

Scene

Small hostel with eclectic and vibrant decor

The small Aventura Boutique Hostel's layout has a nice balance between private and shared spaces that's often hard to find in a hostel. The tiny reception room is covered in past guest's notes and memorabilia, with an old porcelain tub that's been cut away and converted into a love seat beneath a community message board. The kitchen is similarly small and eclectic, with bright green walls and a lofted lounge area above a wooden dining table. The entire hostel is quite compact, but, thanks to some of the apartments having their own kitchens, the communal space doesn't usually feel too cramped, and the guests tend to be older and more discerning than the average hostel crowd.

Location

Outside the city center, in northern Budapest

The hostel is located about a 20-minute walk north of Budapest's city center, on the Pest side of the river, in a residential neighborhood. It's situated on a narrow, lively street about a 10-minute walk from Margaret Island. St. Stephen’s Basilica and the city's central tourist areas are a 13-minute bus ride away via a line that stops two blocks from the hostel. The Budapest Airport is about 30 minutes away by car; alternatively, travelers can reach the airport on the metro in just over an hour via the Nyugati Pályaudvar station, which is a 12-minute walk from the hotel.

Rooms

Themed dorms, some with lofted beds; private apartments with full kitchens

The shared dorms come in different themes, each with their own decor invoking Africa, India, or even outer space. Each has twin beds with their own storage and reading lights, some of which are perched in a lofted area. The lofts break up the dorms into dynamic spaces with more elbow room than the stacked bunk beds more commonly found in hostels. Screens and dividers add extra privacy in some rooms, and all have sitting areas with a table and chairs. There's also a small double room with a minimalist Japan-inspired theme. The shared bathrooms are small, with walk-in showers and rusty fixtures that could use some updating. Several more spacious private apartments also have themed decor, living rooms, small full kitchens, and en-suite bathrooms with shower/tub combos.

Features

Communal kitchen, massage services, free Wi-Fi throughout

Like most of the shared rooms, the communal kitchen also has a lofted area with bean bag chairs where guests can lounge. Below, it's fully outfitted with an oven, two refrigerators, a coffeemaker, a microwave, and cookware, though the small space can get crowded if the hostel is packed. There's an Internet corner with a computer, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout. The hostel outsources its breakfast to a cafe and a butcher in the same building with different options that can be added for a fee. Massages can be arranged in-house, with a service that offers 70-minute sessions in the hostel's own treatment room.
