Bottom Line

The 20-room, budget Hotel Perugina is a family-run inn in the spa village of Chianciano, which offers few frills but tons of personal attention, and serves as an excellent base for exploring Tuscany. Built in the '60s, but renovated in recent years, rooms and public areas are basic. Special touches, however, like the free buffet breakfast and discounts at Ristorante Patri, a superb restaurant under the same ownership, give the Perugina a homey feel. The hotel is a standout value in Chianciano.

Hotel Perugina

Scene

Quiet and homey, with a pretty garden, TV and breakfast room

The Hotel Perugina is tucked away in a residential area, and looks ordinary from the outside, like the other 60s-era apartment buildings surrounding it. But the Perugina is more than its architecture and decor. Family-run and managed, there is a cozy atmosphere to the place, a great spot to regroup after a long day exploring the sights and sounds of Siena. The breakfast room is painted a deep mauve, with red tablecloths and fresh wildflowers. The buffet breakfast is far better than ordinary, with muesli, ham, salami, cheeses, and other fresh, local delights. In warmer months, breakfast can be taken in the side garden under the trees.

There is a TV lounge in the lobby and a corner bar with mauve walls and plenty of plants -- not formally landscaped, these are well-loved house plants and orchids. Hungry guests are welcomed by name at Ristorante Patri, a few doors down, owned and run by the same family, and offering superb Tuscan and Italian food -- much of it locally-sourced and the ultimate in freshness. There is no stress at the Perugina, which doesn't need a grab bag of amenities to feel like home.

Rome is an hour and twenty minutes via fast train, which can be caught at Chiusi Station, eight and a half miles away. Chianciano Terme has a nice Etruscan museum, good restaurants, bars, and other nightlife options.

Rooms

Spotless, cozy, basic, and uncluttered

Rooms at the Hotel Perugina are spotlessly clean and beautifully maintained, with light wood floors and furniture and simple striped bedspreads. There are desks, but no sofas, and freestanding wardrobes take the place of closets, but there is adequate storage space for a few days. Rooms are on the small side, but uncluttered and peaceful. Each has air-conditioning, a small flat-screen TV, minibar, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are not large, but they are adequate, with immaculate but small glassed-in showers.

There is a small side garden with tables and chairs for relaxing, although the views are nothing spectacular. Parking is free. The hotel's small size and family-run atmosphere means that guests are treated to personal assistance when it comes to planning sightseeing and organizing things for an optimal vacation.
