Bottom Line

The 48-room Hotel Santoli is
a mid-range, family-run property dating back to 1973 set on the outskirts of
the Italian spa town of Porretta Terme. While its 1970s-style interiors
feel dated and retro in about equal measures, the hotel has impressive modern spa facilities and direct access to the thermal baths next door. Rooms too feel a little old-fashioned, however balconies have lovely views of the picturesque surrounds. Rates are surprisingly affordable, but for somewhere a little more
ritzy check out the Hotel Helvetia Thermal Spa in the town center.

Scene

Family-run hotel with mixture of '70s vintage-retro and dated vibe

Built in 1973,
the Hotel Santoli occupies an unattractive concrete block typical of the decade,
its partial covering of ivy failing to hide a weather-worn facade. Inside, the 1970s vibe continues, though with a more vintage feel comprising retro-style seating and funky period lighting -- it treads a very fine
line between vintage-retro and just plain dated. The hotel is run by the Santoli
Family, who have apparently been involved in the hotel business since 1929, and
who place a real emphasis on a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. The property's
48 rooms are spread across five floors, all accessible via two pairs of
elevators, while the hotel has a corridor that connects directly to the
renowned Porretta Terme spa next door. The atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful.

Location

Set on the outskirts of Porretta Terme spa town 40 miles from Bologna

The hotel is
located on the southern outskirts of the thermal spa town of Porretta
Terme in the Province of Bologna in northern Italy. The town dates back to the
14th century and is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery and woodland
threaded with hundreds of miles of hiking trails. The city of Bologna is around 40 miles away,
or an hour and a half by car via the A1. Alternatively, the Porretta
Terme railway station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel and connects directly
to Bologna in just over an hour.

Rooms

Clean, dated rooms that open to furnished balconies

The hotel's 48
rooms are all decorated in a simple, modern fashion with a slightly dated -- though clean and cozy -- 1970s style. As well as opening to a small
furnished balcony with lovely mountain views, all rooms are air-conditioned and
come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are also
well-maintained, if a little old-fashioned, with wall-mounted hairdryers and walk-in showers.

Features

Impressive spa facilities include a state-of-the-art hydro-massage pool

The hotel's
highlight is its modern spa featuring an extensive range of facilities and the
only spa in town exclusively for guests' use. The centerpiece is its impressive
pool that includes numerous stations where guests can be massaged with jets
of water and air with varying degrees of intensity and position. The fifth-floor
wellness center also provides a Finnish sauna and Turkish steam bath together
with water beds and resting areas. The hotel also has the rustic-themed Il
Bassotto restaurant -- complete with fake TV fireplace -- serving a menu of
Italian favorites with a twist.
