Bottom Line

Located across from the Holbox Beach, Villas HM Paraiso del Mar is a beautiful upscale property that offers a variety of board packages, from breakfast-only to all-inclusive. The 84 suites here are gorgeous, featuring lots of wood paired with colorful Mexican fabrics and art pieces, and many have balconies with views out over the sea. Facilities include a lovely pool with lounge chairs, more sunbeds by the beach, and a couple of bars (one poolside), plus a buffet-style restaurant open for all three meals (though admittedly, food gets mixed reviews). Overall, this property does a good job of merging boutique intimacy with the all-you-can-eat-and-drink perks of an all-inclusive, but it's small and there's no fitness center. For a more traditional boutique stay, consider Villas Flamingos, which only has 14 units.

Scene

Lovely all-inclusive-optional property with lots of thatched roofs, local details, and greenery

Villas HM Paraiso del Mar is an upscale, all-inclusive resort set across from the beach in a pretty area surrounded by palm trees and tropical foliage. Rooms and facilities are housed in a series of stucco buildings with pale-yellow and white exteriors, wooden banisters and support columns, and huge thatched roofs, all connected by meandering pathways lined with bushy tropical foliage. The lobby is a beautiful semi-open space with tall thatched ceilings and rustic seating areas with wicker chairs and sofas, and there are little covered nooks throughout the grounds for travelers who want to relax somewhere quiet. Local accents such as hanging lanterns with seashells, terra-cotta tiling, and colorful serapes add charming touches. This property is great for families and couples alike, and the main market here is vacationers looking for an all-inclusive-optional spot to relax right by the beach.

Location

On Holbox Island, overlooking the beach and a 10-minute walk into town

Villas HM Paraiso del Marillas HM Paraiso del Mar is located on the tiny island of Holbox, right across from Holbox Beach and about a 10-minute walk from the town center, where there are several restaurants and shops. Getting to the island requires traveling to the port town of Chiquila (about a three-and-a-half-hour bus ride from Cancun) and then taking a ferry or speedboat to the ferry terminal, on the opposite side of the tiny island (about a 15-minute walk or five-minute golf cart ride away). The ferry trip from Chiquila to Holbox takes about half an hour. There's also a tiny airport on the island, but it only accepts private/charter flights; the hotel can help arrange this kind of experience on request.

Rooms

Junior Suites and Master Suites with lots of wooden features and colorful decor; some with whirlpool tubs

This property offers 45-square-meter (485-square-foot) Junior Suites and Superior Junior Suites, along with 80-square-meter (861-square-foot) Master Suites. Junior Suite and Master Suite units sleep up to four guests, with varying configurations of beds. Decor across categories is consistent and pleasant, with wooden floors, shutters, and beds paired with off-white walls softly illuminated with sconce lighting. Colorful elements include Mexican blankets in rich, warm hues on the beds paired with solid-colored throw cushions, traditional artwork on the walls, and delicate mobiles made from shells and suspended from ceilings. Master Suites are spread over two floors, with bedrooms on the upper levels, and they have ground-floor seating areas with colorful upholstery and cushions. All of the Master Suites and some of the Villas HM Paraiso del Mar Junior Suites have terraces or balconies furnished with chairs and hammocks, many with sea views, and Superior Junior Suites and Master Suites have whirlpool hot tubs right in the rooms, next to the windows. Standard amenities include mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi, but rooms lack coffee- and tea-making facilities. Bathrooms feature a similar aesthetic to the rooms, and they have walk-in rainfall showers, small vessel sinks, hairdryers, and makeup mirrors.

Features

Lovely pool, beach with lounge chairs, and restaurant with buffets for all three meals and varied meal packages

The amenities at Villas HM Paraiso del Mar are geared toward vacationers. There's plenty of space to lounge right on the white-sand beach across the road from the hotel, with padded lounge chairs and cabanas interspersed throughout a shady area with big palm trees and a few thatched parasols for shade. There's also a lovey pool with a fountain feature on one side surrounded by greenery and more lounge chairs. Pool bar service is available during the daytime (after sunset, guests can pop over to the lobby bar to continue drinking). Wellness features include a Temazcal, a traditional sauna once used for Shamanic purification, and there's a reading lounge area for guests to relax. Massages can also be arranged. Wedding packages are also available, and the hotel offers a variety of options, from Catholic weddings to traditional Mayan services. All three meals are served at Paraiso Restaurant, which offers Mexican and international food served buffet-style. There's also a snack bar for lighter meals, but food at both outlets gets mixed reviews from guests. Breakfast-only, half-board, all-inclusive (with local alcohol), and all-inclusive premium (with international alcohol along with gifts, sparkling wine, and a handful of other perks) packages are available. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort and massages, laundry services, tours, and transfer services are available for a fee.
