Articles Mentioning Upper-middle-range

New York Marriott East Side

Located in quiet but central Midtown East, this Marriott has what you’d expect from the big chain (comfy, clean rooms, friendly staff, mediocre food), plus more — a location with some history, freshly renovated rooms, great electronics, and a fancy top-floor gym with great views of the city. It’s not cheap, but nothing is in this part of town.

New York Marriott Marquis

This 1,949-room behemoth in the middle of Times Square is filled with conventioneers, tourists, and theatergoers — the Marquis’ buzzing atmosphere nearly matches the chaos of the streets below. Top-notch beds, clean, contemporary rooms, and a large, modern fitness center make this a premier pick for Times Square.

Fitzpatrick Manhattan

This 91-room boutique hotel has a convenient Midtown East location, a casual pub-style restaurant and bar, and handsome rooms with flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, iHomes, and waffle-weave bathrobes. The Fitzpatrick Manhattan doesn’t have the on-site business or fitness centers that can be found at many of its competitors, like Fifty NYC or Kimberly Hotel, but it does offer simplicity done right. Personable service and well-equipped rooms make this under-the-radar boutique a solid value.

Gardens Suites Hotel by Affinia

Offering 132 contemporary studio, one-, and two-bedroom suites (basically apartments) with kitchens, the Gardens Suites Hotel by Affinia is an excellent upper-middle-range option for families on longer vacations, and an obvious choice for folks in town for health reasons. It’s location near Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Central Park works for different types of travelers. Everything is attractive and spacious, but the hotel is light on amenities. It does offer a small gym, delivery of meal kits from Meisterdish and groceries from FreshDirect, free wine hours, bikes to borrow, and a Serenity Lounge with free coffee and tea. Also on the plus, pets are allowed. Note that the hotel charges a mandatory facilities fee. For lower rates, Renaissance New York Hotel 57 has a full restaurant and more of a boutique vibe.

The Westin Boston Waterfront

This 793-room, sleek, modern, 16-story hotel is a fantastic option for travelers with business at the attached convention center. Spacious rooms, a solid pool and gym, and a lively bar scene are corporate crowd pleasers. On-site dining is limited — at the moment, as a new steakhouse is coming in October 2013 — but there are several other dining options in the area.

Kimpton Onyx Hotel

A three-minute walk from TD Garden, the upper-middle-range Kimpton Onyx Hotel is a contemporary property with a great location for all types of travelers. Its 112 rooms can be a bit small, but they have bright pops of red, flat-screen TVs, iHome docking stations, and well-stocked minibars. Nightly free wine hours and a pet-friendly policy create a pleasant atmosphere. Unfortunately, a daily amenity fee is charged to cover things such as Wi-Fi and access to a small fitness room, which are typically free at comparable hotels. Other key features include a lounge-like eatery off the lobby and a basement meeting room. If being close to TD Garden is a primary concern, it’s worth comparing rates with the nearby Boxer. Kimpton devotees preferring to be near Boston Common can upgrade to the romantic Nine Zero, though it’s pricier.

Staybridge Suites Las Vegas

An extended-stay hotel — not priced to compete with the bigger hotel-casinos on the Strip, just five minutes away — the 118 clean, modern, apartment-style guest rooms at the Staybridge Suites best those at the nearby Residence Inn in terms of features and in-room comforts; but it’s immediate surroundings are a bit barren.

Las Vegas Marriott

Right outside the Las Vegas Convention Center, this hotel offers ample business services and a well-equipped gym. Yet with a forgettable pool, no nightlife and remote location from the action on the Strip, it has little to recommend for anyone other than conventioneers. Plus, suites are on the small side.

Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani

This 297-room hotel is located in central Waikiki, a two-minute walk from the beach and a couple of blocks from the shops and restaurants of Kalakaua Avenue. Air-conditioned rooms are bright and modern, equipped with furnished lanais and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a more intimate feel when compared to other resorts in the area, with facilities geared toward couples looking to relax. There’s an open-air pool with a furnished sundeck, modern fitness center, and free evening reception that includes wine and snacks. The restaurant serves Japanese and American cuisine in an elegant setting, plus a breakfast buffet for a fee. Other perks include free access to selected museums and 24-hour room service. Families might prefer the nearby Sheraton Waikiki, which adds kid-friendly facilities and multiple restaurants.

Element Las Vegas Summerlin

A sleek, eco-minded alternative to the grandiose resorts, the element (with its intentional, lower-case “e” for style) is a great pick in the quiet suburb of Summerlin, near Red Rock Canyon — free high-quality breakfast, free happy-hour drinks on weekdays, and 123 stylish rooms, each with a full kitchen or a small kitchenette area without a stove.
