Each of the 106 one- and two-bedroom condos at the three-pearl Pali Ke Kua is privately owned, so the quality can vary. That fact aside, the property sits right next to the path to Hideaways Beach, which is the only beach in Princeville, and its spacious condos make it a popular choice. Pali Ke Kua is the only condo development in Princeville with its own restaurant -- Hideaways Pizza -- which is open for dinner. Next to the restaurant is a simple pool area with a hot tub. The complex is best for self-caterers, and is also a fine spot for whale watching in the winter. Travelers looking for a more lively resort setting should consider the larger Hanalei Bay Resort, which has more features, but is slightly cheaper.
Scene
Relaxed oceanfront condo complex that's best for self-catering travelers
The vibe at this condo complex atop the Princeville bluff is about as relaxed as it gets. This is one of the most ideal locations in Princeville, due to its ocean views and the proximity to local restaurants. Tropical landscaping covers the grounds, and there are also Bali Hai views from multiple vantages around the complex, including from the pool. However, Pali Ke Kua is best for travelers looking to vacation on their own terms. There's no loud entertainment, no hula shows, and little in the way of space for socializing. The restaurant in the complex, Hideaways Pizza, is a bit outdated inside, but does offer some of the better pizzas on the North Shore. Otherwise, it's worth noting that each unit is individually owned, meaning quality, features, and style do vary. These conveniently located one- and two-bedroom units are great for small groups, families, and couples.
Location
Above Hideaways Beach, a 15-minute drive to Hanalei
Pal Ke Kua's location in Princeville offers a resort-like community along with close proximity to all of the North Shore attractions. Similar to Poipu, Princeville is part of the Visitor Destination Area, which allows any home to be rented as a vacation rental. Because of its location right on the cliff, seeing whales in the distance from your lanai in the winter months is likely. The path leading to Hideaways Beach (also known as Pali Ke Kua Beach -- hence the resort's name) also starts on-site, though keep in mind that despite being paved, it is steep. The St. Regis Resort -- which has great sunset views and cocktails -- is a 12-minute walk west. Otherwise, a car will be helpful to explore. Queen’s Bath, a popular hike to a tidal pool, is a six-minute drive west. Hanalei is a 15-minute drive to the north, where there are plenty of beach options as well as shopping and restaurants. The drive to Tunnels Beach will take 20 minutes, while the Kalalau Trail and Ke’e Beach will take 25 minutes to reach (in the same direction). The Lihue Airport is a 50-minute drive away.
Rooms
One- and two-bedroom condos with full kitchens and variable decor, plus ocean or mountain views
Each unit at Pali Ke Kua is privately owned, making it important for guests to do a little investigating before they book. Unfortunately, we weren't shown all 106 units, though the one that we did visit was pleasant enough. The furnishings vary from modern to old-school aloha decor, and features aren't uniform either. We saw lots of wicker furniture, bright tropical prints, and ocean-inspired art in the unit that we visited. The complex offers one- and two-bedroom condos with ocean or mountain views. All have full kitchens and private lanais, plus cable TVs and free Wi-Fi. Most units offer beach gear, though -- again -- this isn't guaranteed. Other variable features include the number of beds in bedrooms, and sofa beds in living rooms. Air-conditioning isn't standard. In the winter, whales can be spotted from the private lanais in units with ocean views, though we found most lanais to be lacking in privacy.
Features
Beach access, restaurant, and a pool, but little else
Pali Ke Kua offers a oceanfront location with beach access and a convenient on-site restaurant and pool, though other features are non-existent. The pool area is clean and spacious, and includes a hot tub. However, guests who want privacy in the hot tub at night will notice the restaurant overlooks the whole area (though the restaurant isn't open during the day). In the evening, the restaurant serves some of the better pizzas in the area. The grassy lawn that overlooks the ocean is available to all guests, and is a great place to relax. Luckily, this complex is not a timeshare community, so guests don't have to worry about aggressive sales pitches. Wi-Fi and parking are also free at the resort.
