Bottom Line

The Rossio Garden Hotel is a three-pearl boutique property within walking distance of many of Lisbon's historic and cultural attractions. Renovated in 2014, interiors include murals with black-and-white illustrations of historic Lisbon by Portuguese designer John Rolo. The contemporary property has 56 clean and pleasant rooms, many with city views, but they lack tea/coffee facilities and mini-fridges. The property serves breakfast for a fee in either a small dining room or on a covered rooftop. Guests complain about the lack of a bar and say the Wi-Fi, which is free, is not dependable. For a younger vibe and a cheaper price, travelers may prefer Hotel Gat Rossio, which offers free breakfast -- but its rooms can be smaller.

Scene

Stylish boutique hotel in the heart of Lisbon

The Rossio Garden Hotel is a boutique hotel in the city center, close to many tourist sights. Housed in a red masonry building circa 1900, its interiors, renovated in 2014, are modern and dramatic. Lipstick-red sofas, chairs, lamps, and area rugs punctuate a lobby with cool gray marble floors, black leather seating, and massive illustrated murals of historic Lisbon. The white reception desk, under an enormous black-lacquer chandelier with red shades, is covered by a photo illustration of ornate historic interiors. The small breakfast room has black tables and chairs with a buffet table framed by a photomural on the wall. The rooftop space, with faux boxwood plantings and a red carpet, features black iron supports for a glass ceiling whose panes can be removed in warm weather. Overall, this small boutique property offers chic and stylish interiors and rather affordable rates that draw tourists planning to sightsee.

Location

In the center of Lisbon, a walkable distance to major attractions

One of the best features of the Rossio Garden Hotel is its proximity to many of Lisbon's historic and cultural attractions. Public transportation is also convenient, with the Restauradores Metro Station, Rossio train station, and the pick-up and drop-off point for the airport bus just two minutes away on foot. The Coliseu dos Recreios and the Teatro Politeama are also a two-minute walk away. Rossio Square, one of the city's main squares, is a four-minute walk from the hotel. It's a five-minute walk to the shopping district of Avenida da Liberdade, while the Santa Justa Elevator is a six-minute walk away. The historic Alfama neighborhood is about a 20-minute walk or 15 minutes on public transportation. Lisbon Airport is a 20-minute drive or around a half-hour on public transportation.

Rooms

Spacious rooms with contemporary furnishings

Rooms at the Rossio Garden Hotel are spacious, with spare interiors, contemporary furnishings, and dark-wood floors. The long windows, some with balconies and views of the city, are framed by white, floor-length curtains. Beds have tufted leather headboards in shades of cream, brown, or taupe and are topped with white linens -- guest remark that the quality is good -- and accent throws and pillows in shades that include navy, red, or taupe. Some rooms are furnished with curved, black leather sofas and low tables. Some guests report that lower floor rooms can get cooking smells and noise from nearby restaurants if the windows are open. Each room has a wall-mounted flat-screen TV, a safe, and free bottled water. There are no mini-fridges or coffee/tea facilities, much to the dismay of many guests. The bathrooms vary, with white or gray tiling, contemporary white porcelain fixtures, and rainfall showers. Toiletries are provided.

Features

A good breakfast for a fee and a rooftop lounge, but unreliable Wi-Fi

The Rossio Garden Hotel offers breakfast for a fee and guests report that its fresh fruit, cooked-to-order eggs, and fresh breads are good quality. The meal is served in a snug dining room or on the hotel's rooftop. The hotel offers free, if unreliable, Wi-Fi throughout and the use of a computer. There is off-site parking at a discount for hotel guests. The 24-hour front desk has concierge service, rental car service, and airport transfers. Free newspapers are offered in the lobby. The hotel offers its guests an app for their tablets and smartphones with tourist information for the city of Lisbon.
