Bottom Line

In many ways, the London Bridge Hotel gets it right. The property offers elegant interiors with handsome cognac-colored leather chairs; on-site fine dining and classic cocktails; and sophisticated rooms, suites, and apartments with luxury toiletries and stylish furnishings. The property's central location near London Bridge, across the river from the City of London, makes it ideal for both tourists and business travelers. All guests also get free access to the multi-level Fitness First gym next door. The hotel is on the pricey side, though -- guests seeking a more affordable upper-mid-range property should check out the Hoxton in Shoreditch.

Scene

New building with traditional facade and modern interiors

The hotel is situated in an attractive red brick and white stone building with a traditional English facade. It was built in 1996 and has a classic column-supported archway above the door. Inside, the softly lit, sophisticated lobby takes a modern approach to color and texture: cognac leather chairs and minimalist wood tables are complemented by brown velvet and red-striped pillows, chunky red ottomans, and a multicolor wall painting. There are Victorian-style blue glass candelabras throughout that look out of place amid the modern autumn-colored decor. The hotel's central location makes it popular among both tourists and business travelers, especially those needing easy access to the City of London financial district. Guests and people working in the area are often seen relaxing in the Quarter Bar and Lounge, a handsome space with wood parquet flooring, gray leather booths, and plush red chairs.

Location

Next to London Bridge, near the City of London

The hotel is located on the southern bank of the River Thames, on a quiet side street leading straight to The Shard, London's newest skyscraper. The property sits just off the main street running from London Bridge, and the London Bridge Underground and railway station is a two-minute walk away. There are a few restaurants and shops on the block, and the famous Borough Market, which has produce stalls and food carts, is a four-minute walk away.

Rooms

Contemporary rooms, suites, and apartments with air-conditioning and luxury toiletries

Rooms are contemporary and understated, with clean lines and few accessories. Furnishings are dark wood or cream-colored, and bedding and curtains are neutral beige, cream, and brown. All rooms come with minibars, air-conditioning, free Wi-fi, flat-screen TVs, and tea and coffeemakers. Deluxe and Executive Rooms also have DVD players. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos and deluxe toiletries from The White Company. One wing of the hotel is dedicated to Executive Suites, which have oak paneled walls next to and behind the bed, and separate seating areas. Two-bedroom apartments that sleep up to six guests are also available. Room service is available 24/7.

Features

Elegant restaurant, bar serving food, business facilities, and multi-floor gym

The elegant Londinium restaurant serves a breakfast buffet daily (reservations required) and re-opens again at dinnertime with an a la carte menu; cuisine is a modern take on British and European classics. The on-site Quarter Bar & Lounge is open from morning until late at night, and serves snacks and light meals (such as Teriyaki chicken skewers and English cheese platters) along with classic cocktails, beers, and wine. The lobby has a couple of computers for guest use, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. There are also five conference and meeting rooms with modern furniture and audio-visual equipment. The Fitness First multi-floor gym next door isn't officially a part of the hotel, but it's free for guests to use. Being a full-on health club, it offers the works: an individual spin room, a floor devoted to treadmills, and another floor devoted to other exercise machines.
