Bottom Line

The Montpelier Plantation has a picturesque setting atop a hill overlooking the ocean, and 60 acres of lush grounds. Everything here is refined and elegant, from the unobtrusive but top-notch service, to the island-inspired decor with a modern twist, to the fine dining options -- one of which is housed in a 300-year-old historic sugar mill. However, some might find it somewhat stuffy for an island vacation. Plantation Rooms are completely tech-free and lack all the modern amenities featured in Garden Rooms (flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, Wi-Fi) to help guests indulge in the slow Caribbean rhythm. They aren’t as luxurious as other room types, though, and could use a thorough renovation. The pretty sandy beach is a 15-minute drive away, but the hotel offers free shuttle service.

Montpelier Plantation & Beach

Location

Atop a hill in Nevis, right by the Botanical Gardens, and a short drive to Charlestown

The Montpelier Plantation is set in 60 acres of lush grounds overlooking the ocean. The estate is part of the foot of the volcano, and the elevation allows for wonderful views both of the crater rim and the clear waters of the Caribbean. The Nevis Botanical Gardens are just a few minutes down the road, and the hotel’s private beach is just a 15-minute drive from the property. Charlestown, the island’s capital, is an easy drive away, as is Pinney’s Beach, one of the most famous but still pretty empty beaches on the island.

Nevis is the smaller of the two islands that form the nation of St. Kitts and Nevis. It is quieter and less crowded than St. Kitts –even though they both remain pretty unspoiled--, and has wonderful stretches of sand. Beaches on the western side of the island are more family-friendly, with calm, shallow waters great for swimming and snorkeling. The east is rocky and has rough waters, but the beaches here are a beautiful sight as you drive along the coast. There’s little nightlife, but some beach and hotel bars have live music several nights a week. The Botanical Gardens, the Jewish Cemetery, the Museum of Nevis History, and the Eden Brown State are all sight worth checking out if you want to take a break from lounging in the sun.
