Bottom Line

Located on the incredibly busy Route 495, the Super 8 North Bergen NJ/NYC Area is a small, no-frills motel, ideal for travelers on a budget. Rooms are small and dark, with tiny bathrooms and cheap furnishings, and are subject to traffic noise any time of day. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi, free parking, and serves a free continental breakfast each morning. There’s also a hotel shuttle that takes guests to and from NYC for a small fee. Travelers looking for a similar hotel in this area might want to consider the nearby Holiday Inn Express North Bergen--Lincoln Tunnel, which offers more amenities and nicer rooms for a higher nightly rate.

Oyster Hotel Review

Super 8 by Wyndham North Bergen NJ/NYC Area

Scene

A budget motel that may feel a bit sketchy at night

The drab exterior of the Super 8 North Bergen leaves much to be desired. The hotel practically sits on top of Route 495 -- the traffic laden highway that leads to the Lincoln Tunnel -- with a slab of pavement and a worn Super 8 sign marking its entrance. Inside there’s a small, glass enclosed front desk and a tiny breakfast bar with nearly 10 high-top stools chained together--the purpose of which can only leave guests wondering. The rest of the hotel is set up in a classic motel style, with two floors and outdoor hallways that are easily accessed via the two parking lots flanking either side of the building. With ground floor rooms mere steps away from the highway, safety is definitely a concern, especially at night.

Location

On Route 495, very close to the Lincoln Tunnel

Travelers looking for easy access to New York City will appreciate the Super 8’s location on Route 495, the highway that leads directly to the entrance of the Lincoln Tunnel. On the other hand, those looking to get a good night’s sleep without any noise interruption, may want to stay elsewhere. Rooms at the Super 8, especially those on the ground floor, are almost guaranteed traffic noise at any time of day. As far as attractions are concerned, there isn’t much to do in the immediate area. The New Jersey Meadowlands Sports Complex is about a 15-minute drive, and Hoboken is about 20 minutes away -- as long as it’s not rush hour.

Rooms

Small and dark with cheap furniture and tiny bathrooms

Room decor at the Super 8 seem to be having a bit of an identity crisis. The pastel curtains appear to have come from a 1990s baby nursery, the brass lamps have a bit of an ‘80s feel, and the threadbare bedding is going for the ‘70s mod vibe. Interior design aside, rooms are dark and cave-like thanks to small basement-style windows as their only source of natural light. Furniture is cheap, and some pieces show signs of wear and tear; but all of the necessities are present, including a desk, chest of drawers, mini-fridge, microwave, free Wi-Fi, and a flat-screen TV. Like the rooms, bathrooms here are also small and dark. A white hairdryer is mounted to the wall and toiletries are presented in the kind of red basket that usually serves French fries. The tiny strip of paper that lines each toilet promising that it “has been cleaned for your protection,” prompts more questions than answers.

Features

Free Wi-Fi, free parking, free continental breakfast, and a paid shuttle to NYC

Though it has few amenities, the Super 8 does offer the holy triumvirate of hotel freebies: Wi-Fi, parking, and breakfast. The Wi-Fi is fast and reliable, parking is ample, and breakfast generally consists of eight items, including pastries, waffles, and cereal. For a small fee, guests have access to a shuttle that runs between the hotel and New York Port Authority, a nice feature, considering tolls and parking in Manhattan can cost a small fortune.
