Bottom Line

The Hawaiian Princess Resort is a gated community made up of timeshare condos, located right on a tranquil, white-sand beach at Makaha, in a residential area of Oahu, 45 minutes from downtown Waikiki. Quiet and with few hotel-like amenities, the Hawaiian Princess is best for tourists who want to spend lots of time on the beach, rather than avid sightseers or business travelers. Rooms are big with kitchens and balconies, but some of the decor (such as the floral bedspreads) is a bit dated.

Scene

A quiet timeshare community on the beach

The Hawaiian Princess Resort sits on a never-crowded white-sand beach with excellent surfing and swimming just steps from the door. The public areas are neither fancy nor carefully designed; they are lit with unflattering fluorescent light and there is no front desk or concierge to speak of. The lobby has several seating areas with couches or tables and chairs, as well as an unofficial library (take a book, leave a book), but there is no snack bar, beverage service, or organized entertainment. The pool is not heated, and there are no cabanas or beach umbrellas, but there are plenty of lounge chairs on which to camp out. The Hawaiian Princess caters to an older clientele, although the apartment set up is good for families with kids who need a home base.

Location

Right on the beach, 45 minutes from Waikiki

Located in the residential neighborhood of Makaha, the Hawaiian Princess Resort is 45 minutes from downtown Waikiki, in what is known as a gritty part of the island. Business travelers will find this location too remote. The resort is secure and gated. The tranquil white-sand beach just steps from the building is never crowded. There are excellent surfing and interesting snorkeling just off-shore. Whales and sea turtles can be seen from the beach and lanais, which all have spectacular views. There is a grocery store a short drive away. The only thing for visitors to do in the area is hang at the beach, and families may want to stay closer to Waikiki for the restaurants and tourist activities.

Rooms

Great views, balconies, and full kitchens

As the Hawaiian Princess Resort is a timeshare resort, units vary greatly in terms of cleanliness and features; some have full size washers and dryers and are well-stocked with beach and kitchen equipment. Others have not been recently updated. Kitchens have breakfast bars, microwaves, full-size refrigerators and stoves with ovens. Gas grills and picnic tables are available for use on ground level. All units have lanais with spectacular views. Corner apartments are especially large and sunny with wraparound lanais. Decor is beachy comfortable, with dated Hawaiian print bedspreads and wicker furniture. Flat-screen TVs and DVD players are provided.

Features

Pool and hot tub, gas grills, and picnic tables

The Hawaiian Princess Resort isn't loaded with amenities, but the beach is lovely and uncrowded. The complex has a pool (unheated) and a hot tub with a patio and lounge chairs for catching Hawaiian rays. There are no umbrellas or shade around the pool; nor is there a snack bar. The complex's Rec Room is really just a few chairs and a ping-pong table. There are propane grills and picnic tables available for guest use.
